mark proctor Posted August 31, 2008 Report Posted August 31, 2008 What are you saying Mark, is it that your YBs are wary of flying down to the loft after they have landed on the roof. If thats what your saying, keeping them off your roof will only make them land further down the road, the problem is the loft landing area. Is it the top of the loft or a sputnik/ landing board on the front. If you have allowed them to spend time on the roof then that becomes home as much as the loft itself. If not, then you are right it is a problem within the loft area. yes your right mick..spot on mate...its my fault for letting them on the roof in the first place as squeekers...i just couldnt get them of the roof..even with hunger...so like you said its there home now and im paying the price....its just anoying they race home on a race day ..but why if there not going to come in there loft....puzzels me mate...tried splitting them apart from each other...and still the same...but some times from training ..i carnt fault them ..strait home and all in in seconds... :-/ :-/ :-/
van Roberts Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 hello white racer the best way to stop youngsters going on the roof is to throw eggs on the roof but dont let the youngsters see you. it will stop them after a couple of days

Guest IB Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Good to see you are getting to the root cause of your YBs roof topping. Now that I know that the basic reason for them doing so is that they have had a bad fright not once but several times, from you flagging them, I do not think that my previous advice of lobbing a ball on the roof is the right way to solve this case. Basically you have to restore the birds confidence in you, and in their home. Think that will take encouragement, kindness and a lot of work and patience on your part, during the 'close' period, but you should have some help from your OBs which hopefully drop straight to the loft, and the YBs should take a cue from that, and overcome their 'innate' fear. Personally I do not agree with flagging as you are basically stopping the bird landing on the loft. YBs should also be flying for the sheer joy of it, they should be ranging freely for miles, not flying in circles round the houses. I remember well the job I had many moons ago to stop my dad's pigeons landing on our house roof, and succeeded in getting them to drop to the landing board, only to have my work undone a few years later when he started flagging them and chasing them when they landed or tried to land on the loft - and they ended up roofing, not just on ours, but on all our neighbours too.
Roland Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 You know, this may well be a case for a topic of Myths. Blimey just where does it matter where a birds sits? As long as it's contented to do so how can there be a down side? Indeed surely the very opposite may well apply. It is all part of the very basic importants of birds being happy. Never mind, water balloons and pink balls, flipping sure I wouldn't wanr some one soaking me and then smacking a pick ball aside my head. Besides mostly they just move to another roof - neighbours usually of course - and stay out. What does oit matter as long as they want to HOME! And contented birds want to home, and want in, so trap naturally quick. If they don't, then they didn't want home on the day as much as others, and would be behind any way! Well 98% of the time. Mind had a cat around Thursday last. Left on roof all night. Next moening queing up to get in. Left in for a day or so and out. Flew well and trapped ok.
terry mccarthy Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 i let my babys sit on the roof for 2 weeks wen flittering about after that they get the water ballon treatment my birds wouldnt dream of going anywere near my roof now if they did that would be there last time they did it only takes 1 to start them all off
chichichi Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 we use a slingshot and potatoes... only a few times and they stop... goodluck ant
Guest Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 dont think there is allot you can do about it at my last loft loc my loft faced the house and i went through the nightmare of chasing them from roof to roof tried the short of food thing didnt work along with a hundred other things its simply the loft loc to the roof its the easist place to land but try to get the feeding right so when they land call them in right away and lock them down for a couple of hrs by the way it cost me lots of 1st places as well but i want to go to distance races so have to watch the short of feeding bit i moved over here 2 years ago and to my surprise my birds dont go near the roofs hey presto 8x1st 5x2nd 8x3rd this year iam loving it

Lennut Tar Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 hello white racer the best way to stop youngsters going on the roof is to throw eggs on the roof but dont let the youngsters see you. it will stop them after a couple of days Well !!!!!!!!! what can I really say ;D ;D ;D I just couldn't afford to buy all the eggs required at my place etc. Mine are tree hoppers :'( :'( :'(. Tennis ball on a string type thing is my suggesting (much cheaper) & it works just fine. Then again ???????? 10 hours into a head wind, usaully gets them down & in pretty quick ;) . Enjoy.
paullock Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Hi Whiteracer, I am a novice flyer, I have been racing pigeons for 3 seasons, my old birds all land on my house roof before progressing into the loft, this is my fault as I did not know how to stop them. this year i have cracked the art of keeping the young birds off the house roof but I am afraid that it starts from the first time they leave the loft, keep them hungry when letting them out for the first few months, first two weeks let them hop out and stay with them to watch out for cats/hawks etc, get them back in with a whistle or shake a tin of seed, then third week scare them up, they will go all over the place but this will give them the idea of flying hungry and they will stayup for up to a hour sometimes less, if they dont go straight into the loft when calling in cut back the feed its that simple. Hope this helps it works for me. Paul.
van Roberts Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 well lennut tar dont buy your eggs you must have plenty of spare pigeon eggs? you dont let hatch you only need couple of eggs to keep them off roof. throw one egg up then just at right time throw dropper pigeon on loft they soon get the message plus it saves getting all your string caught up in them trees ;D ;D
Guest chrisss Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 there is no way i would get away with throwing eggs up at the roof around my way,in the end all i did was use a big dustbin bag tied to a large pole [twice thats all it took]most took the hint 3 did not, they moved 3 roofs down[they have now sadly gone]there is not easy reply to this one, what works for one would not work for another[that i have learned the hard way applies to everything pigeon related ;D ;D ;D ;D]they still go on to the roof but only on the way in [i am surrounded by trees]
