Guest joshdonlan Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Im looking to build an avairy for my stock birds, so they can bath and sit out in the sun etc. Where is the best place to buy either on line or in the Staffordshire/Cheshire area? B&Q etc are having a laugh with their quality and prices for wire mesh.
OLDYELLOW Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 have you the farmers store B.A.T.A in your area as these will be cheaper or try ebay
alex wight Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Try woodcraft. advert in the bhw, decent prices
Guest joshdonlan Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 i dont know old pal, ill have a look on the net
pjc Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 RV Woodcraft for premade panels or a local farmers merchant for rolls of wire, becarefull of buying over the net as there is some realy poor quality wire around!
Guest joshdonlan Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Thanks for the advice mate, sounds like ill be trying the local farm supplies when i go down tomorrow to pay the bill lol
pjc Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 avoid wire made by a company that is something like munchester, as soon as you try to tension it the welds break!
Guest joshdonlan Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 cheers, are you speaking from experience there PJC? ;D
pjc Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 yep, used to make and sell a lot of rabbit runs etc in my spare time.
Guest joshdonlan Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 something which i may try one day, im always messing around with wood, currently building a new ferret hutch.
andrew gooch Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 sucurity fencing very cheep and works a treat hope u can see it on this pic
OLDYELLOW Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 sucurity fencing very cheep and works a treat hope u can see it on this pic as much as that keeps the pigeons in a mink or stoat or other rodent could get through the wire and if a bird stuck its head though the wire they could soon loose it to a passing cat
REDCHEQHEN Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 I have used only 1/4 inch mesh Got it from e-bay Good value - next day delivery security fencing may stop your birds getting out - but it offers no protection at all from vermin
andrew gooch Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 as much as that keeps the pigeons in a mink or stoat or other rodent could get through the wire and if a bird stuck its head though the wire they could soon loose it to a passing cat dont get any problems with any of them i must b lucky

Guest joshdonlan Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 that would make good mesh for flight or settling cages, will keep an eye out. Did you get it from a building site?
Guest dogeon Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 i bet that was expensive? :-/ the panels are all made ready wired and 6' x 3' wired are £12 half wire half wood are £20
Guest dogeon Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 i bet that was expensive? :-/ i also brought some supple pvc that rolls down in the winter
little sam Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 as much as that keeps the pigeons in a mink or stoat or other rodent could get through the wire and if a bird stuck its head though the wire they could soon loose it to a passing cat Good point there Mark, I would put that conterax netting on for the reason gave, Also stops driving rain getting in
retired Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 If you are prepared to travel a little way to save some money then a company called Moncasters at Louth is very very good - I bought a roll of galvanised mesh (Cant remember the gauge but think inch x inch) for £20 - It was one of there seconds all that was wrong with it was the first four inches of the roll hadnt galvansied properly with it. The roll has built me two stock flights this season and secured a 10ft wooden fence to keep the dog in so cant complain at that.
pjc Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 every roll of moncasters i've ended up with has been poor, when you try and tension it the welds break thats why its cheap.
retired Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 every roll of moncasters i've ended up with has been poor, when you try and tension it the welds break thats why its cheap. We have used it for years Phil and every roll has been exceptional quality. Although you cant see the second flight all that well - The one roll was used to build both Flights and along with the wood coming from a local fancier both the flights cost a total of £25 to make (May regret saying that when the loft is ebayed off lol)
