simon9 Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 hi ive got a 12x8ft blakes loft arriving early jan.ive constructed the base (well attempted) i have it built up 8 inch off the floor on breeze blocks, with 3 pieces of 4x4 timber sat on.do i need to fix the timber to breezes or anything else?or is that fine?many thanks simon
Tony C Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 I have seen where people put a bit of roofing felt between the breeze blocks and timbers to stop any damp rising into said timbers.
simon9 Posted December 14, 2008 Author Report Posted December 14, 2008 thanks tony.do the timbers need fixing to breezes or are they fine just sat on top?
Guest pigeon82 Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 i built my loft a couple of monthes back i dug the base out and breeze blocks down then covered these with a black plastic sheeting from homebase i got it then i got timber and built my base on top of the blocks i have not fixed them to blocks and i have had no problems with my shed my garden is open and has strong winds through it you should be fine mate
joe61 Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 railway sleepers do a great job oh happy days
Tony C Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 thanks tony.do the timbers need fixing to breezes or are they fine just sat on top? Loose would be ok, once your loft is sitting on them they'll go nowhere.
REDROCKET Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 no need to fix timber to blocks plenty room for air movment at 8inch dependant on location fix loft to ground to prevent over turning in bad weather.its happened to us lesson learnt.
Guest spin cycle Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 railway sleepers are good as you can fix the loft floor to them, then the loft to the floor etc. in your case i'd have some anchors loft to ground...think about the effort put in so far....the minimal extra effort to anchor it down and weigh that against the potential hassle of having the loft blown over...or even worrying every time the wind gets up.
Guest Posted December 14, 2008 Report Posted December 14, 2008 no need to fix them down but just make sure the base meets the way the loft makers have laid out the floor supports i have also fixed down my lofts after they are up by digging a hole at each corner and sinking a metal strip down about 2/3 feet and fill with concrete and fix to the loft with screws for the wind
simon9 Posted December 14, 2008 Author Report Posted December 14, 2008 cheers everybody bgreat advice as usual.the loft will be quite well sheltered but i may still anchor it down.
