if the reds got black anywhere in its tail or wing its a cock, if it has brown splashes its a hen

That can't be right, my definate pair of kirk patricks are reds and both have black in their wings and tail.

well in my experience if you have a red and a mealy, with black they are generally cocks.

Hi Stuarty dove, you can normally tell by the size of the wattle.  what sex they are.

The cocks tend to have bigger wattles than hens.

Hens tend to have smaller flatter heads than cocks but as always there is the exception to the rule.

Another way is by the toes! holding the pigeon normally as if you were going to read its ring number gentley hold the outside two toes together just above the ball of the foot using your forefinger and thumb, if the two toes are the same length then the bird will more than likely be a hen. If one toe is longer than the other, then your bird should be a cock. Although not infallable, in 25 years of racing pigeons my boyfriend has only proved this theory wrong twice, both times with hens from the same family!

Hope that helps ...........Amanda
