Guest strapper Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 over the week end ive had several strays in...3 in particular has got me bewildered....... yesterday i drove to cwmbran some 14mls away..south east of my home. i released 3 strays there hoping they would clear and go for home...but on returning home and 25 mins later the 3 strays returned here ??) so once again today having to make the same journey i did the same...thinking oh god i hope them 3 dont return..i was right...only two did! ??) unbelieveable these two strays will come down and go into the loft when i call them!!...and they have been fed very well..while kept in a spare basket. one a gb rung and an nehu.... :)
Dodgy Trapper Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 Why dont you report the pigeons and keep them, you may be surprised and have a winner?. Who knows
Guest Vic Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 A grizzle cock, in fairly good condition, wearing an ets. ring entered my loft last night. This morning whilst basketing my own cocks for a whitchurch training toss, I popped it in a box for a seperate liberation at Shrewsbury. Needless to say it arrived in good time, yet I lost a good bird of my own from the shorter toss. They do amaze you don't they?
gazza1 Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 even better why not report them and give the owners a chance of getting them back...
gooner Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 i had a stray come in 3 weeks ago lovely looking lt cheq pd in super nick, i reported her and the owner asked if i would feed her up a few dfays then lib her, this i done and she heaeded off in the right direction for home, that night i went to lock up and she was back in, i phoned the chap up and told him, as it happened i was going on a trip that took me within 40 miles of his house on the monday and 80 miles from mine, well you guessed it she beat me back, she is now happililly flying out and being transfered, the owner has informed me that 2 weeks prior to going missing the said bird was 1st club 14th fed, they certainly do do the strangest things
Guest strapper Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 even better why not report them and give the owners a chance of getting them back... they have been reported smart arrrs.....i was doing the owners a favour as they suggested(after speaking to them) to liberate them ....theres always one!
jimmy white Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 strays do the strangest things they most cerainly do,, a race rubbered yb came in [many years ago] stamped wing,, belonging b/pool,, in loft for two days,, phoned up owner,he asked me to keep it,, i told him , i would first give the bird a chance,, and send it , as a trainer to penrith [nearer b/pool than the lothians ] the bird returned here, then sent to lancaster ,,came back here,, he then transfered the bird, which, then raced right on to the yb nat,, the following year , as a w/hood cock , sent to longtown 4th bird, 7th in club,, then penrith 2cnd bird 4th club,, winning the pools [this was a club sending 600 birds at that time] after winning the pools £80 odd on the sat from penrith,,the bird dissapeared next day [sunday] ,,,phone call that evening,,,,the bird was back in the original loft in b/pool ;D i,e it flew approx 100 miles north on sat to win the pools, then 150 miles back south next day to his old loft,,,,a year later,, ;D nowt so strange as pigeons ;D
fletch Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 i remeber my dad getting in a lovely grizzle about 5 years ago the bird was a few years old, he reported it and it was from south wales, the bird had topped the fed a few weeks earlier had been lost from a race in france (rennes if my memmory serves correct), my dad arranged for it to be libbberated about 10 miles from home, when i came home from, work there was this bird sitting on the side in the kitchen, as if he lived there, was funny at the time, he had to send for it in the end,
allenyeates Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 About 3 years ago had a 2 year old IHU bird from Co. Kerry in, Owner said it was it,s first time over the water and he did not think it would return and would I like to keep it as it was of good stock. I trained it singled up from every point of the compass, even across to the brother in law,s at Neath. It was bang on every time. When I started training it with mine it was fine, one day I went to Andover (10 mile) and took the birds, Iwas 3 down plus the IHU chq. Got a call that night it was back home. Its transfer was through that very day!!! Had to transfer it back. Was I just getting it fit? Or did something click in it,s head, I thought I had a winner in the making!!
pjc Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 over the years, like most we get a load of strays in, report them etc. When a bird comes in and is flown out it will take about 10 days to fully recover and a number of times birds have been fed and watered, given there freedom to leave and will stay at the loft, when it reaches 7/8 days they will start to leave the area but return latter in the day and on the 10th day will head for home! They know when they are ready to leave, get themselves fit, find there bearings and go home if given the chance! Many years ago a purchased a yearling from a clearance sale where the owner had died, i broke the pigeon trained it and raced it, the following year i trained it again and lost it. The bird was then reported in a loft near its original home which was only about 7m from mine and the chaps grandson had taken a fancy to this bird so i told him to keep it. Exactly 2 years latter the bird dropped back on my loft as if he'd never been away!
thunderboult Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 strays are funny things, i remember getting one a couple of years ago,it arrived with one of mine from a race at newbury. i phoned the owner up and he sent for the bird straight away(picked up monday morning), the next week while out in the garden waiting for the birds, that same bird which had been sent to another race came straight back here. i could'nt believe it, she'd only been to the loft once in her life and had only been here for a day and a half , yet she homed straight back here. she must have liked it down here.
Guest strapper Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 i had a youngbird in on a friday night a few years a go ,while i was down the club basketing, the wife got the bird in and put it in the small shed. i reported the bird to someone in the midlands, saying that on sunday id be calling up that way into louella,s..and would sling it out for him, well when i got to louella,s i remembered this youngster who was still squeaking..so i liberated it at louella,s...well it came back same day ..shocked would be too weak a word...i transffered it over and as a yearling it topped the fed for me..6 weeks later after topping the fed ,a cat had it next door.
blaz Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 a few year back i got a dark checkered cock come in with my yb him being a young bird his self .so when i trained mine i took him put mine up then him 10min later .back at loft all back including him so this went on for a week or so . as i flew ybs open bowl he was going in and out.i took my birds on a 35 mile trainer .dark checkered cock back 10 min in front of mine.so i reported him and got i touch with the guy who he belonged to. the guy said right away i will be coming for him as he has topped the fed.i told him that he was flying in and out and what i had done. he said he would be through in 2 days the next day i let my birds out him along with them.he did not come back in .how embarased was i to phone him and tell him.he was ok about it but to this day i still think he thought i had kept it .darn birds

retired Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Remember back in 2001 releasing an NEHU99CON (Consett Fed i believe) outside Darlington train station and getting a text about four hours later telling me it had dropped back on our loft some 160 miles away. It had only been in the stray hutch 2 days!
Guest Vic Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 whats its ring number vic does it start GB 08 Z582-- ???? It will be going again this morning, (shorter) as I think it is in fine condition, and should really make for home. The bird is not wingstamped, so could be a Scottish bird. IF IT COMES AGAIN I'LL INFORM THE OWNER, BUT AT £30 PLUS A GO, ARE PIGEONS IN THIS CONDITION NOT PUTTING PRESSURE ON US? oh! RING NO. GB07S87500.
OLDYELLOW Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Hope it finds it's way home at least your trying to get it to go on its own steam

GB07S87500. As you state its in fine condition and should make for home, Then you state pigeons in this condition are putting pressure on us? Think its the owners decision as to whether its putting pressure on them. I for 1 would love to have the chance to know the whereabouts of 1 or 2 of my lost birds vic.
Guest Vic Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 I've just sent it to Whichurch, about 30 mile. The bird, I have just checked with the Reddings, Belongs to a Mr H Starrs, Hamilton. Any of you Jocks have his phone number, in case it comes back again later? The RPRA didn't have his phone number. SE wind here with showery weather, but I've seen many good Scots birds make it home from here over the Years. Cheers, Vic.
Guest 67ghirl Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Tried the Bt phonebook only one J Starrs from Blantyre, Lanarkshire but there is also a Hamilton in Leicester but no Starrs there ???? :-/ You could try the SHU. Sorry can't be of any more help
Guest Vic Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Thanks Anyhow. I don't think he has a landline phone, probably like most, uses a mobile. Let's see what happens, I might not see it again.
Guest Vic Posted June 10, 2009 Report Posted June 10, 2009 Although not a good day, he turned up about half hour after my own birds. I'll start the re-possession procedure going tomorrow.
