Guest Owen Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 I set up a breeding programme for myself a few years ago. Buying pigeons had not been very good for me. Some of the birds I bought were useless. So I started by breeding for homing ability, mostly because I only had a couple of birds that had got cards racing. I tried breeding from them without success. I lost the youngsers from them, without exception. Then I won the odd race and I decided I could move on to breeding from birds with good homing ability and some winning blood as well. It was at this point I gave birds to certain people so that I could know how they did under differant management. Obviously, I had to give birds away that were out of my best, so that I could know if they were any good. Then as time went on, I had learnt how to fly widowhood, and it suited my lifestyle. My birds then won races. So I decided to breed from cocks that had won several times. Again it worked. My losses went down and the birds got a bit better again. I still gave birds away for test purposes. These days I use the bull system and only breed from 4 times winning cocks. All my youngsters are from winning fathers and some are from winning mothers as well. Again, I gave birds away. And again they were from the best. No doubt I will stop doing this sometime and I have stopped giving birds to people locally. I don't enjoy being beaten by my own birds too often. I know that nobody can garrantee selling winners, but my plan is to sell birds that are very likely to win. Maybe next year or the year after. The one thing that I am proud of, is the fact that my birds are dependable. And they are always there or there abouts. So in conclusion, I do give my best birds away. The only thing I insist on is, that I always use my own rings, so that I always know when they score.
