micko and jack Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 CHAIRDE FRIENDS after reading "I hope this answers all your concerns" you all now know about me breaking my spine see attached photo of my x-ray but heres my latest problem (I'm sure all of you who read my posts say that's all he ever has is problems and your right but that's why I come here lol) as you can see from jacks avatar our nest-boxes are at floor level great when your 2 1/2 like jack and his height but to be honest they are just not working for me getting down to the bottom boxes just causes to much pain so I have a notion of ripping them out and putting them on the back wall 7'6" high and 4' wide should I A move them now (I have birds on eggs/chicks) B leave them for a while (until when) if I moved them now will the birds go down again (how long) will they stay with their same partners (could I put different cocks to hens) as we only have 1 loft and no room for another moving the nest-boxes make sense for the pain and it will make it easier to partition the loft for splitting the hens and cocks thanks for your thoughts mick
maverick Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 GET THE BOXER UP HIGHER NO FUN IN IT IF YOU ARE HURTING YOURSELF DOING YOUR DAILY WORK IN THE LOFT
micko and jack Posted June 20, 2009 Author Report Posted June 20, 2009 i was hoping for some thoughts on WHEN i should move the nest-boxes
paddymac Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 Micko you are probably better leaving it till the end of the breeding season, will cause less upset for the birds.
Guest IB Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 Loft alterations belong to the close season - end of September is time enough for you to work it all out on paper & get it right before you lift a hammer or saw. Sorry to hear about your back problem, and no offence but even an able-bodied person would find floor-level boxes hard going. My bottom boxes are a foot off the floor, and my highest are set so that the bird stands no higher than my eye-level. I can get a bank of 4 boxes in that space, mesh off bottom and top so that birds can't go there, and everywhere else is within comfortable reach. Will also keep them tame.

Guest Owen Posted June 21, 2009 Report Posted June 21, 2009 I do not know anything about fancy pigeons, so I will answer as if we were dealing with racing birds. This time of the year it is best to rest your birds and let them get on with the moult after a good rest. Both breeders and racers have worked hard and they deserve a rest. So, you can get on with any alterations you need to do right now. Besides, it is better now because you have the warmer weather and lighter nights. Later in the year it could be cold and raining, making jobs like this a trial.
