Hi,

I was planning on painting the inside of my pens (for the fancy pigeons) white to make it easier to clean and to make it lighter in there. I was told to go for a water based white non toxic emulsion. Is this ok? Can anyone recommend anything?

Thanks,

Jamie

before i paint my nest boxes, i have met a salesman from B & Q. He's Pigeon Fancier as well 30 yrs ago. I've ask an advise if it's okay to paint and he recomended the silk paint. As long as got enough dry before to use it, it's nothing to worry. :)

I would not use a waterbase paint,it may dry quicker but as mentioned looks horrible

when stained up, I would say if u were going to paint [use a oil based paint,] with plenty of time for

drying, + can be wiped

I was always told never to use white inside the loft as it was to bright but if you wanted to paint the inside use a pastel colour as it creates a calmer atmosphere for the birds.

Always use oil based paint so it can be washed/wiped clean when needed.

i was told never to paint the inside as the paint flaked off and the birds could eat it :o :o :o :o

haha, birds prefer a darker nest box, why do you think they are always keen to nest under the boxes etc?

yep sounds about right. sometimes i wonder how i manage to get a pigeon home at all (never mind win the odd race)....'slipped rings' last week..'twilight bue' the next.  i bought the 'blue' to do the shed i wait for the birds on raceday thinking it would be fairly light, but its actually the shade as our 'distance fanatic'. looking in my 'horseman book' there is picture of pigeons in white boxes.

I have painted the loft!

Reason being was, I used to house my hawk in there (I no longer have him so don't panic!) and on a weekly basis, I used to go in there with a jet wash and spray it all down. The untreated wood had a plastic coating on so it was easy for me to wipe down but the water seemed to be getting under it, not being able to escape and hence creating mould on it.

I stipped it all down to the wood, put a white undercoat on yesterday and have just put the top coat on today. I used a gloss white as recommended by some "paint specialist" at B&Q and I must admit, it is nice and shiny and smooth so I hope it will be easy to wipe down. It's nice a bright and airy in there now - just hope the pigeons don't mind it! Next year, when I put the breeding boxes in there, I will paint them a dark colour anyway.

this is supposed to have a certain calming effect, rather than bright white,,, the canary men have their breeding/show cages this colour :)

Just watched a DVD (thanks Thunderboult - it taught me a lot!) and went to see a local man who keeps fancy pigeons. Both fanciers had very nice set ups and all the avairies/cages were painted white and they have never had a problem.

Also, I have finally convinced Dad and he installed a light into my little loft today!
