for somebody thinking about joining the sport then find a local mentor, use your eyes and not always your ears!

for a novice, get a routine and stick to it, keep a note book in your pocket and write everything down you do in and around the loft so that when something goes well or badly you can look back and see what you may have done or changed!

Buy a bigger loft than you think you'll need... ::) ::)

An easy way to wash clay nest bowls is to soak them over-night, then use a pan scrub - the green plastic kind - they come up like new. :)

A good clean loft with plenty of ventilation is a must.

I'm not saying don’t buy from studs period. This is advice is for novices who are new to the game and can easily be taken in by spin. I don’t know you or what results you have achieved or what others have achieved with your pigeons but I could find out if what you claim is true by digging around and doing my homework, a novice wouldn't know who to ask,  what to ask or where to look to find out same.

ps I use the word ‘you’ loosely as this pertains to any stud.

:-/no need to dig about i dont have to lie about my results to sale pigeons.by the way my first pigeons came from the pondrosa stud only two pairs bred fed winners in there first year great birds.

ONLY YOUR OPINION AND YOUR MENTORS IS NEEDED! RUN EVERYTHING BY HIM FIRST, DON'T CHANGE EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME,

AND DON'T! BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR!  :P

The best thing a novice can do is to befriend a top local fancier who is genuine---by genuine I mean interested in the future of the sport and prepared to help a novice.

When you have made this aquaintance never talk when you should be listening. Ask questions and you will benefit from his experience and if you are fortunate he will gift you birds from his best.

Speaking as a novice that is.

:)GREAT POST ;)

That was my experience many years ago and I will always fondly remember the gentleman who befriended me and eventually gifted me a youngster from his 500 mile combine winner.

And believe me I never even requested the gift bird it was a complete surprise.

dont get drawn in to the drug culture , just because you feel thats what everybody else does .

dont overtrain , once they are fit thats all you need , its not so much the phycical side , its mentally stressfull

try to maintain contentment in the loft  , unhappy pigeons are,nt go ing to be in a big hurry to get home.

hungrey birds are reluctant to fly , so are fat one,s

mostly  use common sense , and qeustion things. take no notice of bar room flyers , who cound, nt fly a kite on a windy day

I would say get plenty of good advice on your loft size and design and do your best to follow it before even thinking about spending money on birds. try and visit as many as possible and figure out what will work for you.

I will be bold here because it actually matters. DO NOT BUY FROM STUDS. Buy the bird that won the races. And if you can only afford one, that will be fine. Buying aledged sons and daughters of winners is not always always going to help you. To put it in human terms. Sons and daughters of successful sports people do not always have what it takes to do the same things. Even brothers and sisters of winners do not always do anything any good. Buy a cock and pair him with many hens to find out which one will match with him. It's winning races that keeps people interested and this way you will be bound to win some at least. Do not overstock. Do not over feed. Work hard with your birds and make sure they work hard for you. Keep to a routine. Be happy and enjoy your birds. And lastly, do not become a bore because not everyone wants to talk about pigeons all the time.
