allenyeates Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Sunshine and fresh air--- Both are free. Clean water, if drawn from the tap leave over night to allow any chemicals to evaporate. Chemicals in drinking/tap water stop all your potions working!!! Stop throwing your hard earned away!!
T_T Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Rice ?? a fellow fancier friend of mine swears by it on a Fri afternoon, as the last feed before taking the birds to the club. They will eat the rice given and drink to their satisfaction and rice holds the water very well, birds don't need to go down for a drink.
Guest strapper Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 tip for a novice...dont let obstacles change your mind about keeping pigeons...their like hurdles... there so get over them. one thing is most important..buy and feed to suit your pocket, dont go overboard buying fancy named breeds and fancy named seeds!
Guest numpty01 Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 yes strapper thats sound advice given as lot seem to get fooled into parting with money they dont have to start small and cheaply then go nuts as time goes on but most of all keep good records of everything you do with birds
Peckedhen Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Don't have your YBs out on race days, they might go with the racers and get pulled too far away from your loft to find their way home.
Guest Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 maybe a wee tips for novices thread, would be helpfull , for the newcommer to the fancy condies crystals [permangenate of potash] can be bought very cheaply from the chemist this can be used as a disinfectant [a strong solution of crystals] put in a mr muscle ;D empty spray bottle [or the likes] it can be sprayed on perches , boxes all around the loft. [must be dry when birds come in] also add a few crystals to the bath water, making sure it isnt too strong , this will keep the lice down and bathe any minor cuts or grazesUsed this when i was a young boy, great post.
Guest numpty01 Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 yes as to treatment for lice i think it was also used for scabies so wonder if it will treat skin mites on birds
wilkins Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 I thought that Barley was only grain to contain all 8 essential amino acids read it in feed to win heres a little tip i learnt myself when weaning youngsters keep a watch on thier eyes if any youngsters eyes start looking like thier squinting or eyes not fully open it is a sign of dehydration normally due to not drinking a quick dunk of the beak in water is needed i read the same book and agree i thought it was barley
fletch Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 anyone use rice? rice is full of carboheydrates, and is the only grain [as far as i know ] that contains all 8 essential amino acids. rice can also firm up droppings this is great advice and always give the young birds a small handful in hot weather as holds the water in them so they dont dehydrate to quickly
jimmy white Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 maybe another wee tip for keen novices,, dont be too keen never toss a bird , for at least 5 days after a race, without proper rest,, you wont get proper excercise,, one as important as the other,, p,s your birds will last longer through the season

Guest IB Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 i read the same book and agree i thought it was barley Since this is a thread aimed at novices, I think further explanation would help understanding. First there are hundreds of amino acids, the body produces most of them that it needs except those few called 'essential' which simply means that the body cannot produce it, and they need to come in as a foodstuff, .e.g barley. Second, I'm not sure what the 8 'essential' amino acids are in pigeons? Are they -- isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine? Can someone confirm please.
jimmy white Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 why not? Skull simply because i have prooved this for myself ,, and only my opinion birds hammered in early season ,i,e training, along with racing, will not hold form for the bigger, longer races. without proper rest, you wont get proper exercise,,my opinion rest is just as important as excercise
