Jacobasmith Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 What would be a suitable sized loft for 2-4 pigeons? And also how would i build it? thankyou
gooner Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 it all depends on wether you want to race or just have birds flying round also on the amount of space you have available
Jacobasmith Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 I would like to race them. i have plenty of space in my garden, although this needs to be made as cheaply and as simply as possible (i dont get much pocket money ;D) thankyou
pjc Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 you maybe able to pick up a 6 x 4' shed cheaply that you can convert into a small loft.
gooner Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 if you keep your eyes open inthe local papers you may get a shed for free if not and you can wait a while i will have a 7x5 shed you can have after the racing season has finished
Guest HighSpeedLofts Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 a rabbit hutch would do for 4 pigeons
Jacobasmith Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 Is it possible to build my own loft for under £60? even if it will only fit 2 pigeons in, i am happy as long as i take part in the sport.

Jacobasmith Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 a rabbit hutch would do for 4 pigeons Thanks for the suggestion, i have just been on Ebay and found a brand new 4ft long rabbit hutch for £40 brand new. the door is 2ft long, i could put some plywood other half of the door and lengthen the "bedroom" by a foot. i am assuming that it will need to be raised off the ground by at least 2ft?
Guest Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 My Son (Gooner) has made you an offer Jacob. Patience is a virtue. As we both live within spitting distance of you, we will help you all we can, even the birds. Wont cost you a penny, then you can use your money on food etc

Ronnie Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Yes take the offer of the shed after racing and in the meen time ask if you can pop over and help with the birds and watch them come back from racing it will be a good taster to see if its what u really want.

Guest Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 More than welcome to come here or to my sons whenever he wants. Can learn more initially by being involved. It will also give him time to ask people on here for advice.
Jacobasmith Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 Thanks again for the offer of the shed, but my parents are only going to let me use up a tiny amount of space in my garden (its already full of sheds, a conservatory, etc) the shed would be amazing, but i also feel that i only want to start off small. I dont think that i have ever met any people as generous as you guys, not just in knowledge but about the shed and the pigeons themselves. thankyou
Guest Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 You are welcome young man. Tell your parents we will come over and talk to them and use a little gentle persuasion
paul10121968 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 You are welcome young man. Tell your parents we will come over and talk to them and use a little gentle persuasion theres a technique i know called thumb screwing. 8)
pjc Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 The majority are always willing to help. A rabbit hutch will do, need to make sure its high enough to be away from cats, dogs, foxes, rats etc. The prob with a rabbit hutch is the space limitation, no room to breed and expand your team. Get your parents to take you to Bob's or Gooners and see whats involved themself and then you may get permission to have your shed which will benefit you in the long run as will having parents on your side. Phil
Guest G.Drysdale + son Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 My son started with a rabbit hutch. He then moved them into the shed last year i bought him a 18ft loft from a guy that was packing in then just this year i got a 26ft loft to go along side it thanks to Martin Conlin (aye ready) the only thing it's not at home it's in a compound all fenced off and secure.
blaz Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Jacob have a look at your local papers you might find a 6x4 garden hut cheap or free. as getting a rabbit hutch will sooner or later be to small if you have 4 birds now thy will be sure to breed . think on the long term rather than the short . best of luck blaz
Guest Owen Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 The cheapest way to build a loft is by useing the following products. For the floor use chip board. For the sides and back use 12mm sterling board, but make sure you paint it well. The timber frame can be second hand timber from a recycling yard. The roof can be of felted chip board. If you are very careful and get some help, you should just about manage a 12x6 loft. Then you are in business. Bear in mind that there will be little point in having birds at this time of the year, you have time on your side. You should be able to earn more money in the time you have available. Also ask your friends and family to give you your birthday presents in money. Make a plan and go for it. The discipline you will learn from doing this will be a valuable lesson for you for the future. It will be a skill that few have but is of great value.
Jacobasmith Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 Ok, thanks for the info, guys. lenwadebob and gooner, i will keep in touch with you guys. thankyou
