mattsmith Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 If i let my birds out in the morning they are out for about an hour and a half then come back in no problem. If i let them out in the morning they stay out all day and then come in at night. Is it ok for them to stay out all day and if not any ideas how to get them to come back in?
OLDYELLOW Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 control them with food leaving them out allday can give them bad habits come race day and to leave birds out all day soon become prey to cats and bops
Guest Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 As Mark said control them in some way, half hour in morn, half hour mid-late afternoon is good for them, all day and there is no way your knowing what they get up to.
mattsmith Posted June 13, 2009 Author Report Posted June 13, 2009 They just lie on the roof of the house and sunbathe ;D I let them out before i feed them but they dont seem to want to come in for food untill night time.
Guest Vic Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Mattsmith, read your post again! D.M.Sense
Roland Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Open hole flys in the face of some of the posts above I believe. Have no problem where and when they want in and out.... unless Vic is treating me up the pub lol ;D ;D ;D

They'll know next time to come in quicker. I know this is a stupid question but what do you use to call them in?

"throw them out" interesting way of doing it ,my birds wait next to the sputnik trap for me, and when i open the doors, it is like a mini lib they rush out [maybe my loft is cxxx!!!] as for getting them in,let them go without for a day, then let them out,the first birds in, get fed,the following birds do not,and i bet the time after when you let them out, they will kill you to try and get in,and thats with out starving them,[which only makes them sit around waiting to get back in again,i know i tried that as well!!!]

Don't you pick each individual bird and physically throw them out. :X ??) ;D If I don't do that they line up single file, all in age order and ring number and they wait to 'liberate' themselves single file, ain't that the way your supposed to do it. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I say tomato you say tomato.

Guest Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Glad you deleted the rude post Chrisss, no need for it, I saw the post going off topic. How would I get them back in? I said already, starve them, then re-condition them using the pavlov theory and a tin of dried beans instead of a buzzer. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Reward when reward deserved, and vice verca, pigeons can relearn just like any other.

Guest Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Looks like your birds are imposing thier will on you matt, just show them who's the master by re-enforcing that to them. Starve them for a day or so and get them slowly but surely back into the pattern that you want not what THEY want. Patience is a virtue as with all things, but you'll get there.
Guest Owen Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 If you are interested in using pyschology why not read about the clicker training used to train dolphins and whales. It is also being used for police dogs. I use a modified form of clicker training to train my widowhood cocks. When I first started to fly widowhood, they used to drive me mad. On race days they would not trap and would waste no end of time floating about with their wings up. If a neighbour's bird came past they would tear of after it and waste more time. Eventually you would get them in after they had ruined any chance of you doing any good in the race. These days I am able to feed them all they want to eat before I let them out for exercise without the fear of them making me late for work. And when I want them to go in they are fine and go in. OK. towards the end of the week I have to allow time for them to mess about a bit because they can get very wound up, but they will always go in when I want them to. There are plenty of interesting books on the subject on Amazon. And once you get used to it, you will be pleasantly surprised.

mattsmith Posted June 14, 2009 Author Report Posted June 14, 2009 is this yb,s matt, or all birds?? All of them. I've only just started keeping pigeons and only have 4 at the moment.
jimmy white Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 All of them. I've only just started keeping pigeons and only have 4 at the moment. sorry late in answering matt,, it is very difficult to train just 4 pigeons, but still possible , gaining their confidence, regulating their feeding [growing yb,s need more than ob,s] and routine, pigeons will get used to routine,,,letting them out and calling them in at feeding time, feeding very lightly am, ,,if any of the 4 [or all the 4] dont come in when called in the morning .. lock them out till evening, without food ,[make sure theres no access to food , other than inside their loft] they will soon catch on ,, good luck

Is it ok for them to stay out all day and if not any ideas how to get them to come back in? mine used to do this,i cured the problem by giving them a light feed as soon as they came in after exercising.if they did not come in straight away they didnt get any, they soon got the message and now i no longer have the problem.
pjc Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 food is the only way to get them to do what you want as yb's, once intilled in them what you want they will come in hungry or not. I've 1 yb at the moment that gets fed about 3 times a week, 1 day he's missing when the others come in so goes hungry when he does appear, the next day he's 1st in! I blame Vallance for him!
