Peckedhen Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Paul, I am sorry that you met up with some of our less desirable members > >! Believe me, they are in the minority. As for your dovecote, I think its a great idea and it is how I first started keeping my pigeons. Fantail doves are not really suitable for a dovecote they are best suited to an aviary as they can't escape predators readily. What you could keep though are garden fantails - they are similar but don't have such big fans. They make lovely pets and easily tame so that they fly to you and waddle after you around the garden. They are good at escaping predators apart from birds of prey such as the Sparrowhawk, it would be devastating for your son to see one of his birds caught, plucked and eaten alive! The downside of keeping the birds outside is the droppings....you would not believe how waste one pigeon produces! If you can keep the birds on the dovecote then it isnt a problem. Mine insist on perching on our balcony and also next doors! Do post again and ask any questions you have, we will do our best to help you.

Below is an extract of the PM Hi Paul Welcome to the Site. Firstly i apolygise for the posting of High speed loft his behaviour on the thread is unwarranted. - 99.9% of Site members will help you as much as they can in a variety of different way. With regards to your son, i was 13 when i first got interested in pigeons (via accident) i kept budgies etc. Im now approaching 25 and still in the sport although it hasnt all been plain sailing if you can give your boy a chance with a couple in a rabbit hutch then you maybe suprised - The pigeons kept me from street corners drinking and smoking so they helped me in that sense also. I kept a pair of birds in a rabbit hutch last year although the hutch is no longer used i put wooden grills in it for cleaniness etc and it worked well however advise to keep it safe from cats or only let them out when present or at least around the home. Not excactly sure where you are located but you are welcome to the hutch, equipment and also as an alternative to fantails a couple of Fancy Roller pigeons i have only today been gifted by a member of the site. Kind regards, Chris

micko and jack Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 hi Paul I'm very sorry to read what happened to you but that's life its sad but there are ass***es everywhere that said this is a great site and great people MOST are very good and there is ALL sorts of advice some different from others 10 years ago I broke my spine and now I'm unable to work 2 years ago I had my first grandchild jack after visiting a friend (Bill) jack was bough out to see bill's homers jack loved the birds my friend bill suggested I get a small loft build for jack and myself as an interest for us both I said how can you tell a child to keep looking in the sky your birds are coming bill said get fantails so that's what I did the loft is small by racing standards it 8x4 we have garden and show fantails but I'm breeding crossing the garden fantails to the show fantails the difference the garden fantails are like homers HEAD UP IN THE AIR watching the show fantails HAVE THEIR CHEST OUT HEAD BACK TUCKER UP AGAINST THEIR TAIL so they don't see a lot and makes them easy for cats that's why I'm crossing them hoping for a fantail head up but a full tail if you check the members photos on the left handside I think its under a thread called small city lofts you will see some small lofts and birds you will even see some of jack keep the head up don't worry about the clampits on site the important thing is enjoy your birds we do every morning jack arrives its granda granda I'm took by the hand and straight out to the birds jack gets a small pot of corn sits down on his wee stool and the birds all come to him feeding out of his hand he loves it and I love to see him happy it takes me (with 2 plates bolted to the spine ) about 5 minutes to scrape the loft and do the drinker honest that's all and its great for jack and me if you decide you want fantails give me a shout I live in Belfast but I'll breed you a pair and you will only have to pay to get them over that said I would be very surprised if you decide you want fantails and put a post on the site if someone near you doesn't offer you birds best of luck and remember enjoy whatever breed of birds you go for that's the MOST IMPORTANT THING slan Mick ps please check http://pigeonsincombat.com/film.html send Al an email and let him know that you know jack http://www.pigeonjournal.com this is where I got the idea for our loft but I made changes to suit us http://www.redroselofts.com/starter_loft.htm Mick
PaulA_ Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Many thanks to all of you for your help and offers. We do have 2 hutches at present and one is empty but needs repair, so that might be a good option to start with. In the last 3 years, my son has flitted from football to cycling, golf, skateboarding and scooters; not to mention the ps2, Wii etc. and especially as the dreaded 'credit crunch' is begining to bite and we are having to tighten the purse strings, he just keeps on wanting all the time!!! I know their only young once but he has NO idea about the vale of money and will not take responsibilities for his own actions..................a typical 'teen' I guess. I am having one forum problem though, since this morning, I'm not receiving and notifications so if my responses are a little delayed please don't think I'm ignoring anyone. Thanks for the links etc. I'll be taking a look this evening.
