I think the rule of thumb for me, is to only move on when the birds go straight off twice. They have to beat me home. I also release the birds in small batches. They are in differant mixed groups each time. I like to be at 40miles before the first race which is 55 miles.

start off at 16 mile then 25 to 30 few times each then 50 mile 3 times for me but no plenty of fanciers dont go past 20 and still have alot of success if the birds are fit and flying for hours there ready

more or less my thoughts :) especially letting them off in small batches , if at all poss, i think , the bigger the batch, the more chance of injuries

we started off at about 5 miles and moved up slowly and we now have them at around 40 miles, we in fact tossed them singly today from around the 40 mile mark so we are confident about them going to the first race  of a 100 miles which is in a week  on Saturday
