I am sure that pigeon racing is bogged down with nonsense. And eyesign is one of the biggest things that can lead to a person being sidetracked. The impression given is, that if the eyesign is good enough, you will win races. Well it takes a lot more than this.

You have to select your breeders from their performances on the road. And not all of them will breed you winners. But best to best is always going to get you there in the end.

I will agree that the eyes of any creature will give an idea of health and vitality. But that is all there is to it. I think that progress is all about breeding from tried and tested birds and never breeding from anything else. I think that a Fancier would be better off paying attention to the birds' health and removing those that prove to be weak. Thus, making more room for those who are worth the effort.

The sport is complicated enough without wasting time and effort of poor birds and eyesign.

All I can say is that almost all my breeders are chosen on eyesign and nothing else and I can honestly say that 99% of them have bred winners,it works for me and thats all i,m worried about.

Now this is something that is deffinatly rubbish I dont think any of my stock birds have ever raced, and they have certainly bred winners and as I said before were chosen by their eyes only.

I agree Tony, i've seen National winners that have not bred anything of note!

Young stock can only be selected on methords other than the basket and eyesign is one of them!

I totally agree that not all winning birds can breed good birds. And we also see birds that have not even flown out breed winners. I have no arguement with any of that. As regarding the selection of birds by eyesign alone, sorry but that is stretching credibility to limits.

Perhaps I am a sceptic, but I am also a realist. I think that Pigeon Fanciers have been conned for years. Birds advertised at inflated prices from Studs. Eyesign to obsure the fact that the bird is of poor quality. Potions and additives to make the birds into super birds.

Returning to eyesign, I have researched the subject. I have even asked a Lecturer at Cardiff Univesity to explain it to me. He did this and showed me photographs of both human and animal eyes. I am sure that many illnesses can be seen by the examination of the eye. And I know that deteriation through age can easily be seen. Also the physical condition can be assessed by examination of the eye.

So I do agree that the eye has a lot of information we can benefit from. But to give a reading of the racing or breeding quality of a pigeon. Don't make me laugh!

eye sign is a theory or interest believe it or not its a simple choice , and the choice is yours?  Eye mechanics are not a theory and a short read on' refractive error' (Wikpedia) might allow you to see eyes in a diferent light or from a diferent direction ................ray

OK Ray I will take your advice and have a look at Wikipedia. And perhaps I ought to come clean and admit that I am deeply interested in Genetics. To be honest I would back the idea of progeny testing and selective breeding against anything as imprecise as eye sign. It would not be so bad if the specialists could agree amongst themselves. No doubt we will communicate again. I think that the value of a Forum like this, is to allow us to enter into these discussions, so I will look forward to talking to you again sometime.

owen i like a nice racing eye or ruby but the only thing that will keep them in my loft is the basket that makes and break good or bad birds what ever you have left after the program there the birds you wont they can have skyblue pink eyes for me. but the basket dissides good racers and breeders and stock later on in life.

just out of curiosity why is a ruby eye a fracing eye?
