What is the percentage rule? Its a way of putting a pigeons performances (and your overall performances) into some sort of perspective. Here’s an example: you finish 4th club out of a total of 80 pigeons entered..... doesn’t sound that impressive ah! But in the same race you finish 18th fed out of 2000 pigeons, you’ve finished in the top 1% of the fed result. The 4th club card/ticket won really hasn’t done the pigeon justice to its overall performance. This pigeon in my loft would get a tick against its name due it to finishing in the top 1% in the fed and this is how I judge my overall performances throughout the year....... how many times I finish in the top 1% of the fed.

I set myself a target to finish in the top 1% of as many federation races as I can. This percentage figure you set yourself, this could be either 1%, 2%, 3%, or 4%  depending on your own circumstances (size of team, position in fed, a novice and suchlike). The aim of all this is to set yourself a goal plus its also a way of looking back and judging last years performances over previous years.

Buying

x amount of 1st clubs, x amount of 2nd clubs, x amount of 3rd clubs & x amount of 4th clubs can be deceiving when buying whereas x amount of times finishing in the top 1% in the fed tells you a lot more.  Use this percentage rule when buying as sometimes all that glitters isn't gold, although the results look impressive you could end up buying in pigeons of a lesser quality than you already house.

Surely when buying in pigeons that have raced you are buying them in for stock perposes, just because a pigeon as a good percentage in racing there is no more chance of that pigeon breeding you good pigeons than one that by your method is of lesser quality at racing.
