mamun2a Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 Best Answer - Chosen by Voters The average age of a pigeon in captivity is from about 8-15 years. Both I and others of my friends have had some which have lived into their early 20's, but usually during the last year or so, the bird is pretty wobbly. There is one record of a bird, Kaiser, a World War I, German war bird which was captured by American forces and brought to the U.S., which lived 35 years, but that has to rank as exceptional. In the wild, most pigeons likely live to an average of 5-6 years, with most deaths happening as with all wild animals, during the first year or so of life while the youngster is still somewhat naive about predators, other dangers, and where to find food. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061007095822AAFWnyq Pigeons average 3-5 years in the wild, versus up to about 15 years in captivity. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_long_do_pigeons_live_out_in_the_wild

jimmy white Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 If a bird dies of old age(its feed and looked after properly) how old should it get to roughly ? David this will depend on many circumstances, i,e strains, etc,,,,, ive noticed longevity more , in distance type racing pigeons , i have had birds 22 years old , at the moment have a hen sitting fertile eggs at 12 years old, would say the average age would be about 16 years old
Guest kevin b Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 If a bird dies of old age(its feed and looked after properly) how old should it get to roughly ? David The average age would be between 7 and 9 Dave, but as you can see from replies no hard and fast rule. Some strains will go on longer than others and some individuall hens will lay past this, a hen can go on living after she stops laying but its up to you then. Had a cock years ago "Billy Butlin" my dad caught him in Butlins when we were on holidays back in the 70s he lived till his mid twentys and produced loads of winners, the *expletive removed* would have 2 or 3 hens down every year (before we put fronts on the boxes, love matches my dad called them)and feed all the young never sick a day in his life. kevin
