Depend on what breed etc, but yes ideally 5-7 days, i use sma gold in the water, and struggled to get 1 or 2 of the rings on at 6 days old, But sooner rather than later, Best check them for couple of days after aswell, as occasionally they come off and rings disapear into no where, im sure they must eat them :-)

If you ring them too early the ring may come off in the nest.

If you have difficulty with the rear toe simply insert the point of a pencil behind it and pull the toe through.

The ring sizes can vary from year to year.

you will get to know just looking at them when they are the right size, if you put the ring on the gently pull it back to make sure it can't slip off over the toes.

You say it wouldn't go over the knee joint, it shouldn't need to, put the ring over the 3 forward toes then when you pull the ring on the back toe will apear which you should be able to just pull through or if a bit tight use a match stick, quill or blunt needle and push between back toe and leg under ring and it will give you a lever to pull the back toe through with.

Thanks she seemed to have similar prob with rear toe and her chick seemed younger than 7 days??

The way i do it, is pop the 3 toes in, i use a flight feather, dip it in vaseline tub,And pull toe back with feather, just make sure toe nail does not get caught on ring as you pull back through :-) It gets easier with practise :-)
