I have been cleaning my year birds up at about 6.30 am every day. The trap is still locked up then, I catch each bird and put them through the trap entrance (to get them used to using the trap) and leave them in the trap while I clean up. Then I open the trap up from the inside and feed the birds by hand (leaving the food hopper in the loft) all are eating out of my hand except one. Is this ok or am I doing more harm than good hand feeding ?

the one thats not eating off your hand will no doubt pick up the few bits that you spill knocked off by the birds eating  , im sure as it gets used to you it will become more confident and start to copy the rest , if its a jittery bird handle the bird and stroke its ears either side of its head for a few minutes each day increasing the time should help tame and calm it down ;)

Good question Cosmicdave, Had wondered that too.

I was worried about making them to soft / tame.

Keep posting them beginner questions please.

you can never have them to tame, nothing worse in a loft than a wild pigeon as it will put the rest on edge.

once one panics the rest copy keep them calm inside the loft and at ease with you , if there jumpy ectra there more likely to get stressed see it as de stressing your birds , stress brings on disease such as canker so calm birds are less likely to ail ;)

Mine bounce off the walls Phil :-) so all wild, would not like them to tame, but would like to be able to catch them a bit easier :-)

your doing the right thing by picking them up and handling them every day and hand feeding them , make them tame its more enjoy able for you and the birds are not only raceing home to the loft , food , mate but also to you , well done mate keep up the gd work and wins will not be far away

(evil)(evil)(evil) great one Phil .       andy.

Its actualy quite funny, I was talking to a guy last night who used to race in a local club and he asked me if I knew a local fancier. The guy i had heard of but never met. The fancier had polio and deformed arms, every pigeon in the loft had to be caught by net, netted to basketing and netted to remove the rubbers on return etc but he still had his share of winners!

i use to hand feed mine but stoped it as when ever they were out exercising and i went out to the loft if they seen me they would drop straight away but on the other hand it certainly help with the trapping. :)

Is that mr R?

I think you can get them too tame, and find that the very tamest ones go out never to be seen again. I do hand feed mine when i move them over, when i can, but only do it once a week or so after that and once they have learnt they will never forget, its all about making them confident of you. I've seen lads only spend 5 mins twice a day with their YBs, one of them is shooing them out of the door and they wonder why they do no good!

im afraid any wild pigeons in my loft dont last for long i carnt stand them lol make all the other pigeons nervous as well , i also hate hens that if you look at them come straight off the nest , ive got one at the moment shes really well bred but shes really wild im gifting her to my mate at the end of the season lol , but ive been lucky as most of my new family the de meyers are really tame and the cocks will have your arm off if you go any where near there box which i love , love haveing a fight with them every time i feed them , but ive got one who has claimed my shoulder as his perch and he will try and pull my ear ring out every day i put peanuts in my mouth and he eats them out lol , i see it as a bond between me and my birds they trust me and i trust them to perform lol
