Guest cosmic dave Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 I have let my birds out for the first time today, all but one are sat on the house roof and have been there for hours. I gave them only a little food this morning and have been shaking the food tin but they don't seem bothered and are just sat there, is this ok or will they stay up there all night ? :-/ :-/ Any ideas on how to get them in again ? David

David don,t feed them next time before letting them out, keep them hungry, they,ll soon come in if this is their first time out, and they are able to fly to the house roof, I think you may have left it a bit late to let them out for the first time. Get them out early, so that they have a good look around before taking flight JMO
DJWa Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 why did you feed them today before letting them out i would of given them a short ration yesterday and nothing today then you can control them with the feed tin
Guest cosmic dave Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 I was told to feed a little before letting them out
clayton moore Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 You must have an element of control. To feed prior to letting them out means one side of your makeup is reduced. You need to have pigeons on the ground, to attract your young off the roof, today. If you got a cock or two driving throw them out without there hens these will pull your yb down.

David if your going to give your young something in the morning, make sure you do not let out till l afternoon, mine geta a quarter of an ounce, light mix at 6.30 am then let out at 2pm, then they are looking for there grub, you should be in control not them
Guest pied 09 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 just saw this topic i have some on roof top. done all the right things 'i think' . but still they sit there
Guest Owen Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Many people think that training pigeons is about sticking them into a basket and letting them go a couple or so miles from home so that they will fly back. WRONG. They have to be trained to react to your call when you want them in. And they must understand that they do not ever go on the house. And they must be taught to eat and drink in the basket. You really are messing things up, so you will have to go back and start again. As others have told you, you must use the food tin to enforce your will. But you have to learn to be observant and get it right without having to go to extremes that could adversly affect the health of your birds. Pigeons are very intelligent creatures and will learn fast. They will not know the differance between what you want and what they like, unless you teach them. So you will need to be consistant with what you want from them, and get on with teaching them.
jimmy white Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 i think to be fair,, most beginners learn by their own mistakes,,and things can be difficult for them,,,,,, but best not feed them b4 letting them out,,,,, but the one good thing is,, they will see their surroundings, and probably will drop in b4 dark, [i hope],, if not i hope they drop in your loft tomorrow,,, then the same mistake will not be done twice
Guest Owen Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Sorry jimmy, but I have to be blunt to get the message over. I agree with everything you have said, but like everything in life, you have to learn these things or else there will be a disaster waiting to happen. A little bit of thought and some hard work now will stop things getting out of hand later.
