chickadee Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 guys the best deterrent for a hawk is a buzzard ave got two pair near my lofts and they dont go near the birds but fight with the hawks all the time we have two buzzards at ours too, and also the crows help to keep the hawks away. But, just on the odd occassion sadly this isn't enough. :'(
THE FIFER Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 yes I have the carrions crows they go at the hawks but dont keep them away, and when the crows are nesting can be worse than the hawks to your birds.

Guest IB Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 Aye the whole thing is a fine balancing act that can go belly-up on you overnight. On hawks & crows: yes the crows here harry hawks right across the sky; but one hen sparrowhawk still managed to get into my garden beginning of this year for first time ever and knocked a hen off the loft roof. Pssd at pigeon, cos it obviously wasn't paying attention to what was happening around it, and later in year a crow started attacking the birds as soon as they landed - went on for weeks (good with a gun I'm not) then it suddenly disappeared / stopped as quick as it had started? On garden birds: saw more house sparrows during months holiday in Spain couple of years back than see all year round here. Bit worried about that report though, don't think anything in wild rears 5 young anymore, crows & magpies see to that, and saw a squirrel in local park running along path with wood pigeon's egg in its mouth, so they are taking a toll too. Don't believe starvation is root cause of death in nest either. And of course if you encourage birds to nest in the garden, you automatically attract all of these predators, and of course keep the resident sparrowhawk 'happy'.

Merlin Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Sparrows must produce five nests of young per year to keep their numbers static, this in itself tells how many sparrowhawks are preying on them, sparrowhawks are discouraged in my own immediate area, result an abundance of sparrows here. What lies they weave to deceive.
