This afternoon a Sparrowhawk tried to take out the pigeons at about 200 feet up - first time We've witnessed a Sparrowhawk attack at this height! -  shortly after we heard a commotion from kids coming from the old railway line that runs alongside the Garden.

Then a Blue Cock shot off down the line about 5 feet off the ground.

He came in about an hour later with only 1 tail feather and ripped to shreds under his wing  :(

This is the 4th victim this week the other 3 were kills!

Think you'll find there's a wound there. One of my yearlings got pinned to the ground last year, thought the same as yourself as she seemed OK when I first got her in. Came home from work and she was huddled & feathers blown. I found a single 'puncture' wound where I think the sparrowhawk's talon had gone into her chest. A clubmate reckons the hawk's claw works like a ratchet, if the prey struggles then the claw tightens up and the talons go deeper (and stay deep). Your's being a young bird, more chances of this causing internal injury and death?
