What would happen if we let the BOPs kill all the pigeons/songbirds etc etc. What would they resort to next ? pet dogs/cats etc ?

not all  pigeon men share your sick view bob as i am a pigeon man

What sick view mate, where have I said I would kill them??? Get your facts right, I said in an earlier post I DONT advocate the killing of BOP. I'm simply saying 33,000 pigeon men 2,000 pairs of Perigrines, don't take a lot of working out does it

their has to be some scientist out their that sooner or later will come up with an injection that will not harm race birds but when eaten will kill what ever eats it. we live in hope dont discount it . when it come to chemicals and the powers that be . it will be possible one day

Yes, all birds descended from a common ancestor which was at least similar to the reptiles of today. Raptors have bred, adapted and eventually evolved to what we see today alongside rock doves, the descendants of racing pigeons today. Pigeons are the reason that raptors are the shape they are now. Raptors such as sparrowhawks and peregrines are specialised bird killers. In a natural environment it is their job to keep small bird/pigeon numbers in check. However, if you take any predator's natural food source, mass produce it then release it back into the wild for anything to snack on, then you will attract a large number of predators. I don't agree that the RSPB should be providing artificial nest sites for the raptors in our towns, but I've never heard of a peregrine or sparrowhawk release program. White-tailed and golden eagles, yes, but the peregrines and sparrowhawks followed their food source into the towns and cities, they moved just as the sparrow and bluetit learned that there is easier food around man. It's just that instead of eating off the bird table they're eating your pigeons. Swifts and Swallows will follow the gnats and bugs, raptors followed the pigeon.  ;)

The raptor centre where I work used to be involved in the raptor release programs. They were put a stop to about ten years ago because they were doing fine by themselves. DEFRA no longer issues liscences to release captive bred raptors into the wild.

Also, as an experienced rehabber, I can tell you that 75% of released raptors don't make it past their first year (i.e orphaned birds or reconditioned injured birds) Nothing beats a natural upbringing by experienced wild hunting parents and a supply of wild-caught food which would not be provided by the RSPB. I will be the first to tell you that the RSPB doesn't actually have a clue what they are talking about when it comes to raptors. You want facts, talk to a falconer.

1st do you not think youre avatars not warrented............i kinda get the feeling you are an intelligent man unlike theclown skymaster who does nothing to heal the rift he has started with his bad attitude and doubt he is a real pigeon man  .....any real falconer would not aligne himself with the clowns attitude...

your names spot on for you pal hawk and wood pigeon look similar do they id like to hear the judges comments when you come out with that one in court ;D

Hey don't go throwing insults about mate, that's bang out of order and I'm saying that having had history with Chris (numpty) he has more sense in his little toe than your ever lilkely to have and is a respected member here even if he's heavily dosed up on times.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, if you ever want to be taken with any credability take your rose tinted glasses off and start looking through a 'Genuine' fanciers eyes, not one of us who has been affected by BOP would act as liberal as you which to me defies belief that you can be a true fancer.

You evaded my question of what club you fly in saying it as none of your business well it is because I would like to ask a few of your members what they opinion is on a raptor lover who puts the BOP before the pigeons we dedicate so much of our lives to.  Your ducking the question because you know as well as I do if you showed that atttitude to your club you'd be out on your backside quicker than a hawk attack on a one winged pigeon.

I for one doubt your credability and your mocking of members tells me your only on here to cause problems and not have a decent debate on how we can fairly address the issue as we should be.  Most Raptor keepers that I know, and I know a few don't have licences to keep their BOP.

Swifts, no disrespect mate but how on earth do you know how many releases survive or not, unless you go to the lenghts of tagging them which is massively expensive your only second guessing at best.

Here Here on your comments Gangster, the pigeon men are a generous lot and that's a fact, the RSPB are a bunch of money grabbers on extortionate wages for what, talking the talk and looking at half pictures.    >:( >:( >:( >:(

Apart from the man part  :o (I'm not male) I really do doubt that Skymaster is a falconer. Unless you go out screaming death to all hawks you will generally find that falconers are reasonable people. There have been proposed culls on many species of raptor (proposed by the RSPB) and I find it shocking that these organisations would rather see raptors dead than in the hands of falconers. Many falconers have suggested a change in legislation that allows only licsenced falconers to own birds, and that these birds are taken from the wild sustainably, similar to the system in the USA and Ireland. This would stop dabblers in the sport and keep wild raptor numbers under control. I'm sure if gamekeepers and pigeon fanciers put away their guns and poisons and opened their ears a little more often then some kind of agreement could be met.

If none of us turned up to Blackpool in January that would be a pretty significant statement!!!

No, if all of us turned up at Blackpool and refused to donate to any of these organisations that would make an even better statement.   ;)

Could we all please keep this on topic , as its starting to drift off a bit! also please lets not let the thread go in the same direction as most of these hawk debates go. thanks
