pjc Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 feathers on the ground will be sparrow hawk, percy only hits in the air
Guest Owen Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 Peregrines normally catch their prey in the air. Sparrowhawks normally catch their prey on the ground, (pigeons that is, small birds are often taken midair). In this area, Pontypool, there have been cases recently where Peregrines are attacking pigeons that are on the ground. In each case the pigeons have been away from the urban areas. And in one case that I know of, they were lying around on the ground after a bath. Sparrowhawks have been taking pigeons out of the air around here for ages. They ride them down to the ground. Regarding the peregrines, I think that maybe they are birds that are desperate because they are hungry for one reason or another. Possibly, they are injured or they could be young and have not learned to hunt yet. Two years ago we had a peregrine attacking pigeons literally on the lofts. And it was doing it with the owners standing there. We think it must have been starving because of injury. Goshawks are getting to be a menace near the wooded areas. They attack by slashing at their prey, inflicting injuries, and then follow the injured bird to the ground.
Delboy Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 Peregrines sometimes go immediately to ground with their kill. I have seen a peregrine kill a crow on the ground. I helped the crow
