billt Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 "IF the sparrowhawk is big enough to kill and eat pigeons" IF.........do you actually keep pigeons? If so where? female sparrowhawks kill pigeons, I'm in west wales but it could be anywhere, I've seen it many times, my birds
pjc Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Don't think Bluedoo was refering toy you Bill! I've only had female sparrowhawk killing the birds, they hit them as they land on the loft, not fast enough to kill in the air.
Guest bigda Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 There's no way a bird could eat 4 pigeons a day, it wouldn't be able to fly, feeding young only lasts a short while they don't kill for fun too much risk of self damage they kill for fun mate don't bother them none, have seen them having a go while having one bird in its grip and there are plenty bop kept in captivity but are out and about at the weekends you don't seem bothered mate i am and have seen birds hit the side of the house and killed stone dead when they see Percy thats how much a impact they have and they will do anything to get out of they way as you would if a lion was on your tail

pjc Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Street wise birds seeing a sparrowhawk will take to the sky and stay there until the threat goes, after a while the sparrowhawk will get fed up and move on.

pjc Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 Watch how ferals fly around town! They stay below roof level and dodge in and out of buildings making it very difficult for percy to make a dive at them for a strike!

I've only had female sparrowhawk killing the birds, they hit them as they land on the loft, not fast enough to kill in the air.they attack by suprise over 200yds they will out fly any pigeon if the pigeon jinks enough it will give up after that , but they are very fast at the sprint. suprise and speed is there game
pjc Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 can you imagine the disappointment ??) when he shuts his talon's ;D a bundle of feathers :X :X ;D I've seen a couple of reports now where councils have employed BOP's to clear the ferals from an area of there town, the faulconer spends a couple of days in the area, charges thousands, doesn't kill a pigeon the hawk just causes them to move elsewhere! When the BOP has done his job and is taken home they ferals come back! Another waste of council money!
Guest spin cycle Posted August 31, 2009 Report Posted August 31, 2009 IMO you've got to start somewhere...so all credit to david bills and the mirror. the fact that the rspb are arguing back means that they now feel they have to justify their actions in response to pigeon fanciers arguments. i feel it is an argument that can be won and that the first target should be the removal of artificial nest sites.

Bluedoo Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 The cock never gives any problems just the odd fright when it flashes past the pigeons. he is not much bigger than a blackbird at best but some of the hens nowadays are enormous getting and very fearless squaring up to you when you try to get your pigeon of them :-/ :o Maybe in your neck of the woods, but up here they're bigger than that and yes they do take pigeons. Definately 2 of mine that I'm aware of.
