cowman Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 a farmer does have the right to shoot a dog if its attacking live stock...but first he has to give the owner a chance to retreive the dog. if he doesnt give you warning then he can be prosecuted. on the other hand all dogs should be controlled or never off the lead. you are right but a farmer has the right to shoot a dog if it is just in a field with livestock unatended it doesnt have to be attacking livestock/
lawrie Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 if the dog is harming live stock he can, if the dog isnt most farmers will have it removed. most wont shoot dogs unless it is a desperate situation.
Guest Freebird Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 you are right but a farmer has the right to shoot a dog if it is just in a field with livestock unatended it doesnt have to be attacking livestock/ Why would he wan't to shoot it then? If I had a cow or sheep in my garden could I shoot it? Some funny laws I think!
lawrie Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 you could kill an animal like a sheep or a cow. it has to be done on licensed property though. and you have to be licensed to kill it. i spent 2 years learning about killing animals.
THE FIFER Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 its against the law to shoot any bird unless they are game birds and you own them, or have permission, kill a crow or a sparrow you will be charged,
lawrie Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 bop are a pain for pigeon fanciers, but even if the protection on them were lifted...they would still do what comes natural to them. im sure if you shot at a bob in your kit of birds you would do more harm than good.
Leroy Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 You don't have any legal right to harm a bird of prey. That breaks the Law, nothing to do with RSPB, Governments make Laws, and they enforce those Laws through courts. Its Government we need to convince to change those Laws. Having said that, no bird of prey will ever harm, far less kill one of my birds in front of me. That's why 'the forum advice' is to remain with your birds all the time they are out. 99% of their protection is up to the pigeons through being streetwise. 1% is down to you, for the odd occasion that they may be taken by surprise on your property, when you are their last line of defense, to scare the thing away before it even has a chance to get started on your bird. No Law against that. good post

I live in a small village, and the number of times I get stopped in the local shop by people who say "I had one of your pigeons in my garden" when in fact it wasn't a racing pigeon but a Woody or collared dove. I remember some years ago, my Grandmother having a yellow budgerigar (Lutino) in a cage hanging in her front window, and the number of people who thought it was a canary was unbelievable. If all those people who feed the wild birds in their garden were to look out of their windows at midnight and see what they were feeding, they may change their minds. Such is the ignorance of most people, and these are the very ones that the RSPB prey on for their donations.
