mealybar Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 I heard today that a mobile phone mast is most probably going to be erected in the near vicinity of my loft. What do you think? Do you think it will effect the pigeons? I've looked at the risks (for humans) around these masts, and officially there is no evidence of any health risks, just some conspiracy theories [probably ], and some small studies showing some correlations linking it to various things. Found out tonight that: Mobile phone radiation is just another part of the electro-magnectic specrum though, on the scale it is between radio waves (just normal car radio, and tv radio) and microwaves. (Higher up the spectrum are - in order; radar, infra-red, visible light [everything we see], ultra-violate (the sun), x-ray, and gamma. The higher up the spectrum ones can cause damage, nuclear power and the radiation waste problem is from the gamma type.) Seeing that, I cant imagine the phone signals ever creating a problem for the pigeons,,, unless the pigeons homing instinct is tuned in on that frequency ;D ;D
Guest Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 Well, mobile phone mast around 100 feet tall erected without prior warning at 3am one Sunday morning, around two years ago, 100 feet from my loft. My only worry is that if it ever falls, it falls the other way!!! ;D If its any consolation, Mealybar, heard the other day that mobile phones are at UK market saturation point, so hopefully the network and network use is near its absolute maximum. Also posted elsewhere the 'scientific view' that there is no 'sound' wave out there that has a known affect on pigeons homing ability - and the 'circumstantial evidence' to back that view up is that if there was, it would surely affect other birds, insects and animals homing abilities too. Hope yours is a nicer colour!!! ;D
Guest Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 It may be of interest: When my mast first went up, well and truly fell for the scary stories. (1) any 'unusual' behaviour in the birds, immediately suspected mast. Paranoia did wear off, eventually. Nothing wrong with them, 'problem' was with me. (2) almost from day 1, started suffering headaches. Their frequency eventually decreased. A year later on a rare visit to the doctor (hearing problem) routine blood pressure test - found to be high .... totally unaware of this. Main symptoms? Er, headaches. ;D Said elsewhere, we are perhaps too ready to blame outside causes for 'whatever' problem when the real cause may be a bit closer to home than we first thought. In my case, even closer than 100 feet away.
Chatrace Posted November 22, 2005 Report Posted November 22, 2005 A Flyer here had a 300 foot tower placed within 300 yards of his loft 3 years ago, he has won Avg spped 2of these years and was 2nd Avg speed the other year. I have been try to get the phone company to put one up next to my loft :-)
Guest Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 Reckon so, Chatrace. ;D Simple when you work it out. ;D ;D Bird phones home first, gets a fix on direction, then flies the direct line home. ;D GPS would be another motivational tool. Be able to telephone additional instructions : 'hard left', 'right a bit', 'get back on the job'. ;D ;D ;D Most likely bring in new fanciers in droves. 8)
Guest Silverwings Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 looks to me like pigeon racing could turn into a spectator sport in the near future, could have medicinal advantages ? like "oh dear one of me young uns is on the pub roof down the road ? ill have to nip down there an knock it up !
mealybar Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 Havent heard much about it for a while being away from home, and also allot of work being done on the house so I think priorities have gone elsewhere for now, we'll see if it happens :-/
THE FIFER Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 I DO NOT THINK THEY POSE A PROBLEM TO THE BIRDS.
hooky Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 bout only prob i could see is young birds smashing into the wires
Guest Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 at first they said that mobile phones could cause an explosion in a petrol station, then they said there wasnt ebnough energy produced. then next thing you know they where hiding the masts in the price signs on the forcourt. these so called experst aint got a clue.
THE FIFER Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 THEY DO NOT WANT TO LET U KNOW ANYTHING
T_T Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 I have a very large water tower 500yds from me and sat on top of this tower must be at least 16 masts the tallest being some 30-40' high with the shortest being 20'. Don't really know if it's effecting my pigeons performances because they have never been without it.
PIGEON_MAN Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 Said elsewhere, we are perhaps too ready to blame outside causes for 'whatever' problem when the real cause may be a bit closer to home than we first thought. I THINK BRUNO SUMS IT UP IN THIS PART OF HIS POSTING BACK IN NOVEMBER.
