class pigeons ? your choice

Hi Jack,

I can see your point, but a pedigree is only as good as the person who writes it. When you are buying/selecting pigeons, you only have yourself to go off by judging the pigeon in your hand and by your own eye. If you don't pick up on any faults the bird may please you, even if it is faulted it still may please you, but at least you can judge that for yourself! Even in this day and age of genetic traceability, if selecting by pedigree alone you are totally in the hands of the pedigree writer.

What part of Sunderland are you from Jacko, and what club do you race in?

Maybe a good idea to look at the orriginal pedigree's for Rutter bros. Something like: Hen found under the railway bridge???????????????? As for selectig a bird, I always think the best looking bird is, the one that drops late in the evening when no one else has one.

Hi All

You have got to assume that the pedigree writer is telling the truth to allow the debate, if someone offers you a bird from a pair with 6 wins each that are not much to look at or handle OR from a pair that look and handle perfectly but cant get home on the day (AND THERE ARE A LOT OF LOVELY LOOKING BIRDS THAT FIT THE BILL),anyone that goes for the bird from the pair with the 6 wins are buying the pedigree, ie its ancestry.

And Peter just cos the bird came from under the bridge doesnt mean it wasnt well bred or have a good pedigree, it just means you havent seen it.

And i agree with the bird dropping late at night by the way, a marvellous feeling.

And just while i'm rambling on a bit lol, the list of attributes at the front are great for pigeon fanciers who are trying to have a team of birds that conform to certain standards (a bit like crufts), and they are nice to look at and make for a great hobby, but they have little bearing on winning races or breeding winners, how many of us have had birds that look and handle perfectly, have great eyesign, and cant get near the clock, yet other birds with exactly the same qualities can.

Its not what you can see or feel that makes winners. just wish i knew what it was and could bottle it.

Its only my opinion of course and would be interested in others views.

Hi lads,

Jacko, what you say is perfectly true! I have had some beautiful birds bred from direct children of UNC winners that were being brought home from races by Amtrack, in perfect health by the way! Despite the fortunes spent on them, these did not last much longer then it took the time to sign for them! Also, I have had some "not so beautiful" birds that have topped the Fed. But having said that, when I have purchased by pedigree alone, and I have been guilty of it in the past, I have not had very much success at all. The success was all to the pedigree writer for emptying my pockets!

Does Norman Robson still fly in your club Jacko? Used to know him well some years ago, but haven't seen him for a long long time!

Jack see where your coming from but your belief is no different to anyone elses if it can't select the breeders for you and pedigree can't, it isn't much good is it?

Thats absolutely true Albear, couldnt agree more, thats why we're all in the same boat, just if its off 2 winners it MIGHT shorten the odds a bit.

I was just making the point in reply to the comment that buying on the pedigree being rubbish, it might be the case but if the pedigree is accurate its got more going for it than any of the other theories, obviously you need to be close to the winners, apples not falling far from the trees thing.

Davey,  both Norman and his brother Ted died a few years ago now, while i was out of the game.

Time Carl joined in here, can't get stirred for red and white.

Totally accept what you are saying Jack, basic fact of it all is that as you say, we are ALL in the same boat, with whatever methods we use to select our birds, nothing at all is guaranteed. Maybe thats why this is such a fascinating game to be involved in!

Jack, I am sad to here about Norman and his brother Ted, I used to work down the blockyard with Norman when I first left school. He was a tank of a bloke, and as daft as a ships cat. Don't know how he could smoke that old pipe of his, thing stunk like I dunno what! Only met Ted on a handfull of occasions, but seemed a nice enough bloke!

Nowt wrang with beein surrownded by mackems........Haway the lads!!!

The thing with the pigeon from under the bridge. Ancestory unknown but she was the foundation of the loft.  As for the mother of my 21st sec Tarbes 634 miles 13th sec Perth 297 miles. A stray. Mother of 2nd sec 20th MNFC another stray. Last year we had birds from FIVE different National winning lofts. The two strays are now stock.

Obviously first class birds Peter, maybe birds thast someone paid a fortune for and sent ill prepared to too great a task, now in the right hands doing really well. this has nothing to do with pedigrees, again for fear of repeating myself just because they were strays to your loft doesnt mean they dont have a pedigree.

Well done on the performances by the way, do u have anything that might win Bourges for me.

i ticked pedigree and im not ashamed of it either.

1st of all u all say pedigrees are as good as the man who wrote them, yes u are right but i only buy pigeons off people i trust.

2nd in no expert at picking a pigeon that i no will breed me winners all eyes feet wing etc etc are theories iv got only 1 thing to judge it by and thats to look at the family of birds and the amount of big winners in it.

dont get me wrong i do like a certain type of pigeon but the 1st thing i like to see is a pedigree.
