Time and time again we hear of people setting a pigeon up for this race or that well come on folks lets hear how u do it how u condition it and had it sitting ,my own personal experience in setting up for a race is normally maidstone and never failed me ,was to count back 19 days on the day of marking no matter what they were sitting at the time out it went and then trained them regular from 40/50 miles normally they would have had 3/4 races out to 265 don't care how long it took them as long as they were home .this way they were sitting about 10/12 days with the hens it would be given a 5 day young bird normally its first of the year and never failed me from 365/75 miles ,what's your thoughts and ideas

my thoughts are that you cannae count, if you take the eggs or whatever away 19 days back and then they are sitting 10/12 days that means once you empty the nest they must have laid in seven  to nine days, i have never had the doos lay in seven days

THATS PROBABLY HOW U CANT CONDITION A PIGEON DUMMY ,HENS WHEN IN GOOD CONDITION SHOULD LAY IN 6 DAYS )FACT)

No offence Sammy, I understand set up to be a race or programme which helps condition a bird physically and mentally for a classic race, by giving it 8/9 hours on the wing a few weeks before the big event.

I understand setting a pigeon down for a race is counting back from the race to get the bird sitting in its favourite condition - either at day of basketing or day of race, not sure which - to motivate a physically and mentally conditioned bird.

The only time and the first time I tried it was with one hen last year: 2 x 85 mile races back-to-back; missed next two races (eggy & just her 1st egg) next race 185 miles, then 200+ miles, (Stratford-on-Avon, 'smash') didn't get her until 1200 next day (sent 8, lost 6, 2 next day, she was the 2nd) ; these 8 were 8 of 10 supposedly destined for National races, 'best' were to go to Inland national following week - it didn't happen.  :'(

Hen was rested following week, then 372 miles, (Fareham, smash) sent 3 lost 2, got her after 12 hours 45 minutes on wing, although last in the club she was the only pooled pigeon out of the 10 pigeons timed, winning 2-bird club & £85 ..

Nothing taken out of the hen, so decided to set her down for SNFC  / SCC Falaise 518 miles, 3 weeks away, split her and paired her back to be chipping eggs on race day. Was leaving her alone for 3 weeks but 'panicked' and took her to Alnmouth 100 miles with 4 others for single-up on the Saturday before Wednesday basketing.

None of the birds made it home same day. Clubmate's 2 cocks got home Sunday am, she arrived home as darkness was falling Sunday pm, a hole in her back - hawked - and that was the end of that master plan. Also lost the yearling hen which had been trained not raced all year, and stray cock going home to Newcastle, also lost.

Won't be going training Saturday before Wednesday basketing ever again.  :)

The Pigeons were paired up about 5 days after the Brive National 425 miles for the first time in 2007, and then sent sitting on the first round of eggs this year,

We managed to float a few eggs under the Breeders to hatch out just in case any of the Barcelona pigeons came okay, then if they did we had a young un from them

No Race Bird in our loft had cast a flight until the 26th June This is just a normal thing with our birds it matters not if you pair them up in December so long as we do not let the hen lay a second round of eggs and incubate then the pigeons will hold the first flight well into june

our last longest race of near 600 miles is about the 5th August

very interesting steve i think you will have to elaborate a bit more on this as to how you get them to hold there flights untill then  ;D ;D

Sammy,we do not do anything out of the ordinary regards the pigeons holding there flights, It is a trait i suppose in the family, One factor could be that we do not bother about getting pigeons in racing condition early in the year, our season will start in about the middle of May we train mostly in the car to get the pigeon fit then the first race about 170 miles or thereabouts then Bourges 288 miles onto Brive 425 miles, it is for the long races of 500 miles to near 700 miles we really work on them, As i said we did not pair them up until about the 10th June for the first time this year

Last year when we sent to the Perpignan International 578 miles we sent six pigeons, we had the good fortune to win six prizes this race was the first weekend in August. On return from the race 5 had there second Flight half way up and the other one had cast his third flight in the basket, So i hope it works out this way for this year

Nothing is given to hold back the moult of flights, indeed i do not know of anything that will and if there was a product i would not use it, we let things run there own course but with a little tweak here and there

Rose the Brive National 425 miles was a month before Barcelona. but in the 3 to 4 weeks including the Brive race they had covered a 1000 miles racing. This race was there last one before going to Barcelona the brive race was a fairly tough one with the earliest birds taking 11 hours to fly it so it set them up. Then we paired them up as i said to get them sitting on the first round of eggs this year, Once they had Laid and of course they did quite quickly about 7 to 10 days all were sitting after this we took them 40 to 50 miles about 7 times before Barcelona Marking

I anm not a fan of pigeons flying around home with no road training

I always think that if you have say two widowhood sections or two paired secrions by the time you have let them out for one hour, you can basket up and take them 20miles or more and the pigeons will be back home about the same time as you give them free flying around home and you know then they have had to fly at a good pace so it to me does them a lot of good. We did this in England and we have not changed anything over here in Belgium

In fact We gave the Barcelona pigeons a 20miles toss the day before basket

steve were the pigeons trianed before theywent to the 225 mile race and how much rest did they recieve between them ,cheers sammy ;D ;D

Yes, we trained them up to 50 miles. and once there they had about six tosses at 50 miles before they went to 225 miles

about three times a week So it took around three weeks from the start to the race of 225 miles

Once they have had a fairly long race as soon as they are back to there normal body weight, we start to prepare them for the next race, Normally they do very little for about 10 days after a long race, except normal loft flying and we do not bother how much flying they do

Take this last weekend we were at IRUN about 590 miles, by rights we should have timed on the day of Liberation quite a few did, but we did not, but the first one came in at 6.27 the next morning, by 8.oclock we had 5 of our 6 sent and the last one the next morning, they Won three prizes but not one of those pigeons tried and we were not happy with there performance, When they homed all they did was to sit on the loft roof and Coo, no interest in the loft at all except for one Cock bird, They did not look like they had been to a 200 miles race let alone near 600 miles, So they will go back again in 14 days time to St Vincent 584 miles, but they will have a few training tosses before to liven them up

won a combine race sartilly  by half an hour ,,pigeon two y,o. 4 races as yb, 4 races as ob then in to sartilly 505 miles ,,bird paired jan ,,race in end of june ,  hadnt cast a flight  ,,raced w, hood reared one yb after being paired jan. sat 6 days on second round ,,,,,,,,,,,,two tosses that year  :) this bird wasnt destined for the water , but showed itself to be in fantastic condition , flew for hours on end, on its own after other cocks were in , :)

in my opinion ,,",setting up a pigeon for a race" is really a big question ,,first of all there's the moult ,,they will moult differently on different systems , but once a pigeon is paired up and after rearing its first round will begin to cast its first flight , usually after sitting 12days approx on its second round , an ideal condition [all-though there's always exception to the rule] is when a pigeon has thrown its first flight and the second flight just beginning to" burst through",,once they have started moulting these flights they will continue,, this is why birds destined for the bigger or longer races [on natural] are paired up to suit this condition in the moult , but there's many other things to consider [there definitely are families of birds that moult slower] first of all i would say know  your individual pigeons and know their best nesting condition for keenness , then off course if this bird is to fly a long distance race, it must not be "overdone" previous to the race, it must carry the right amount of fats [this could vary from race to race i,e head wind ,,tail wind , this is the one thing we dont know till their liberated ,, so "setting up a pigeon for a race" is really a big question and very difficult to get right as you dont know what the race will be like i,e velocity wise ,, the worst thing to do in conditioning birds for the distance [on natural] is mating to early and training to early and giving them too many aces ,if a bird was paired on natural in january , by the time the big race came , the bird would be on its 5th flight and preparing itself for a body moult , this pigeon would proove " not to be set up " as it wouldnt be in its best condition for a race in july ,,sorry for the long post but this is a question which a lot would come in to it ,and really couldnt be eplained in a short post, there are many videos ,books etc that go in to this in depth and worth the reading  :)

I dont look as far ahead as you guys and I don't control the molt but I do set up my birds I fly 2 races of importance in our club the auction race and the goldband race both of these are YB races I race the birds for these races VERY lightly and will send them only on a couple of races prior to that date I ship them 2 weeks before the date needed and start medicating a week prior to that and the week after that so the birds are off medication 5 days before the race I take the birds 100 miles training 1 week before race let them rest 2 days then go 40 on the next day then 2 tosses a day for the next 2 days ( short 20 miles and OFF the line of flight then let them rest basketing day, lock up the loft and darken it a bit and give a bath pan with fresh clear water )

last year I took the first 7 positions this year was a bad wind day and still won some money I have never missed the prizes with this
