DJ Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 hi all, ive got 2 different hens that have each laid very small eggs ( about grape size) has anybody ever had this in their loft and if yes can anyone tell me why they think this happens? both of these hens have laid normal size eggs before so i cant understand it 1 hen had already laid a normal sized 1st egg followed by the 2nd small egg and the other hen has only laid the 1st small egg so im waiting to see if and what the 2nd egg is like? any theories anyone ? all my birds have access to grit, black minerals and pickstones so i cant understand this :-/ debbie

DJ Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 yeh the eggs were about the same size as the small egg shown in redcheqhens pic one of the hens is a yearling and the other a 2 yr old and all my birds have access to grit, minerals, and pickstones 24/7 so i cant see it being down to lack of calcium one hen is sitting really tight on the small egg but i dont know what to do-leave it under her or replace it with a dummy egg? maybe she knows something i dont? should i leave the egg and just see what happens? debbie :-/

abbeypap Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 We have a 15 year old hen who laid one normal and one very small egg. We let them both hatch and as you would expect one fine and one tiny. Little one didn't open it's eyes till 10 days and was 14 days before it was rung. Had to move it to another nest as it was getting chilled when parents started sitting off the nest. When it died at 30 days it was still the size of a normal 10 day old. Quills didn't split to allow feathers to develop and when stood on flat surface it wasn't able to support it's own weight. Nest mate is fine and flying round the loft no problem.
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 18, 2009 Report Posted June 18, 2009 was the small egg full or clear I didn't check it
