Guest strapper Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 what do you give to the birds when rearing young? there are many products/feed etc..what is your choice... do not include things like minerals/grit etc. i used to feed layers pellets but found that it made the birds cough as if they had canker. but i did have nice youngsters on it.

Think that's a good idea to make your own as hormoform tends to go off with it being fishy.
gooner Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 the best young uns i ever reared was a couple of years ago and all the parents were fed on was beans and a good grit and then when the young were weaned they were put on maples for the first few weeks

mark croker Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 think its better on the feed, to rich in the water i was told, i have never used it though,
pigeonpete Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 How did you use it Pete i used 2 teaspoons in a 2.2 litre/ 5 pint drinker. :-)
chichichi Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 all you need to do is add a small pot to each box when the young are growing,, fill with beans,, you will get strong healthy birds.. all our stock birds will have a pot of beans in their box.. they still get the breeding mix from the trough but the extra beans are there for the young in the nest.. Also our just weaned young birds will get maples for a week or 2 and nothing else.. this makes them eat big seeds.. stops them picking the small stuff out of a mix.. best of luck ant
OLDYELLOW Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 live natural yoghurt in water for 3 days , aviform Ultimate , plenty of barley and wheat for first 3 to 4 days then i reduce this and feed plenty of maples and green peas and a egg cup of linseed everyday
Guest blythy1 Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 i have found that gem-thepax is spot on when rearing young 3 time a week on the corn.
TonyW Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Buttermilk in water and pot of Vitalin added to feed
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 im with you pete i use sma milk to and get youngsters like turkeys its great stuff i put it on the corn and just wet the corn up with some hemp oil . i nor, ally do a mix at night so its ready for the morning
Guest IB Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 Only tried G10 pellets for one year, couple of years back, added to breeders mix. Thought the birds got into one state bringing that goo back up feeding youngster. Racers were too heavy too. Not impressed, no more pellets ... Not 100% sold on breeders mix either, birds picky, leaving stuff, especially maize, and never in pot, flicked all over the place. Loads of waste, think feeding is too expensive for that. So in 2010 I intend feeding my own mix, breeding will be based on beans, maples & tares, adding odd teaspoonful of wheat & barley. Will feed hormoform too in seperate pots. Won't add anything to water or feed.
Guest BRYANBROCK Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 i have found that gem-thepax is spot on when rearing young 3 time a week on the corn. couldnt agree more best stuff around have used it for years now but i prefer to put in drinkers

Guest joshdonlan Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 I breed on Ybird High protein and feed generous amounts of BOS pellets, but these make the droppings red :-/
