HELP! mesh/grill bottoms in crates???

Does anyone on the site have experience of using plastic grills or wire mesh in training or race crates

 

I am making/altering a pigeon trailer I bought so I could do pigeon training or maybe even mid week races at my club. Looked at the Geraldy one and they had plastic grill inserts in their crates and I also see this video from the Philippines

 

 

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Did they ever damage the pigeons feet while in transit? Which is my main worry :-/

i use plastic grilles in my training crates, newspaper underneath, easy to clean and birds travel well with no shavings left in the car.

Same here,the only thing I do is cut the spacer shorter under the grills.

Thanks, was that in the back of your car or on a trailer?

I was thinking about making it with plastic grills of preferably 1" weld mesh with slide out drawers so they could be easily cleaned and while the drawers are removed I could pressure wash the trailer  :-/

Our club has had wire grills in their crates for years well before any of the other transporters did they are brilliant never heard one complaint about them doesnt seem to bother the pigeons at all and they come back in lot better condition when you get holdovers than birds that been left to stand in a load of s**t for days  They certainly dont slide about on them not like when i had my birds put in crates with corrugated paper

 

What size of mesh was it Rose?

Used paper then plastic grills on top for years now and never had a problem, just throw paper out and new stuff in . BRILLIANT

Thanks, I have a few gardeners wanting the dropping for their compost heaps so getting rid of it is easy. If I can I want the crates to have mesh/grill bottoms and seperate slide out drawers to catch the droppings so I can just scrape then into buckets or right onto the compost heap. This would do away with the need for paper or shavings :-/

i have the plastic nest box grilles in my crates with shavings beneath . one thing diffrent i do Dunc, is secure them with cable ties. had a pal ha 1" square galvanized weld mesh in his with a 1" oversize for basket dimension , he put this extra bit at a 90 degree angle so it was raised from the bottom of the basket.  andy.
