I think you'll have to look at your lenses to see if you can get close focus. You can get 'macro' lenses to take pics of small items if your camera has a detachable lens. Failing that you may have a close focus facility on your camera, most digital cameras nowadays have that. At any rate try to get the pics in focus to start with. If you're not that serious about it then taking pics on a bright sunny day will give you a reasonable image to place in your pedigrees, otherwise there are DIY eyesign boxes which can be made with inbuilt light to do a professional job. When you use a flash gun you will get reflected bright spots on the iris, some use what is called a ring flash to get over this. In any case you do need a bright light source to see the eye sign properly

;)

Hope this helps

Hi eagleowl, I've wondered myself, if i can find some examples of my photos I'll post. I bought a digital about 4 years ago with 6 million pixels, it was a nikon and one of the first at 6 mil I could afford. It has a macro facility but the quality was / is poor.

However only last week I was talking to someone at work who has been a part time photographer for over 20 years, weddings etc. He told me to take good eye photos 8 million pixel and an slr will do the job. He tells me you can go up to 17 million now but it would be a waste of money (and to costly anway!)

Hope this helps a little eagle owl. Would be pleased to hear from experts like eagle owl if there is better info

PS that's a fine long distance cock

I took this pic of one of my racers (long since gone!) Its not anyways special its just to give you and idea of what you can do with an very ordinary digital camera. This was taken with an inexpensive samsung camera set to close focus, ouside on a sunny day (not many of them where I live) no fancy stuff involved... just to show you

This bird was lost as a yearling!... so the eyesign is probably rubbish. I took this pic just from interest, I'm no eyesign freak... two feet on the landing board.. thats me. I do like to see a good bit of colour and hate wishy washy eyes. (Secretly though I do look out for a good circle.)

i only race my birds 275 miles ,dont want to seem rude but never heard of stuart wilcox yes both eyes i posted are cocks ,though the second eye is the better pigeon both have bred winners but the second eye was also a racing machine for me and he breeds winners ever year for me ,a young lad has this season won four first prizes with his sons and grand sons flying old birds in his second season and hes only ten .

eagle owl sorry mate, s wilcox was a personal joke.........didn't realise the second was a proper pic, tthought it was one of them digitally created!!!

Willey if you've seen the for sale thread where I ended up giving some away, this is a brother to the vdw cock i put on, i also have his nestmate. Ths is where it becomes intersting. This cock is fantastic, but I have not yet found the hen for him, I know what i want but can't afford it cause what i want will cost ...........................the interesting part is that no 1  a van bruane hen, has bred 1st fed 2nd GYA at 520 miles, and 95th MNFC flying 633mile the longest flying bird on the whole result. A 5 circle eye, rubbished as a breeder by the eye sign man. Carney has paired her for me to a cock I was very fortunate to get from Geoff and Catherine Cooper full brother to 1st section 3rd open Pau NFC. Last year was their first year together but she wasn't right. This year I bred 3 and lost 2 so quite dissapointed, always try to be honest!!!

id say it was a very good eye, the only downfull of the eye i would personally say is that it has a large pupil, but have viewed champion birds with large pupils, like i say i am no expert but would also liked to have seen the circle of adaption slightly thicker about the same size as the fifth circle, The bird has a good composite which looks to be about 30- 40% id say from about 9-5 o clock on this eye and is a sign i like to see. i like this eye very much and would say that the bird could produce youngsters with good vitality, speed and inteligence, Lmao but im only learning
