two vally fanciers tossed 58 at chepstow to fly to porth 28 were flying round caldicot at 11 in dark let go at 6 30 losses in two feds massive whats youer losses like

Up to now dropped two, one was a challenge bird so really gutted.

 

I have heard about local fanciers dropping big numbers though.

 

We did have a bad toss when i went to work i was three quarters down but thankfully only two now although one was brought back to us today in a box by Carl (thanks Carl really Appreciated)

 

Must state this is ony from training dropped 4 off the loft since January

before this year the last time i bred young birds was 2001 [the year before my daughter died] i lost 4 one night ,2 came back the next day,one was reported, and one was never heard from again.

this year [so far] i have dropped 16 [and only had one training toss] all of my losses were from the top of the loft,none have been reported and once gone they stay gone,what has happened to the days when if a bird was missing at night most of the time it would turn up next morning,i have had nestpairs go up and only one come back,birds on the roof watching the other birds eating and still bugger off,i was looking forward to racing young birds this year now i am not too sure as i am trying to build a team for the future,but with these losses what future?

I hate to hear of all the loses you gents are having, I am here in the usa I have not had this kind of loses you all talk about. I started with 39 youngs birds and still have 38 done been to 20 mile mark they come out the crate and head stright home. they are also on open loft.

The first 5 races are Sunday libs to prevent clashing.

we've a re-starter in our club having similar problems so it could be just part of establishing a new loft. i didn't use a settling cage when i started ( neither has he ) but i do now . i think it is essential. put some cocks to one side..and race mainly hens..i've had unraced yearling cocks win . sorry if i'm teaching 'granny to suck eggs' . i've only 20 ybs this year, but i've 6 more put to one side. work means i can't race ybs much so i've 9 hens sent today..it's normally a safe racepoint...but the forecast is bad. our transporter was heaving so perhaps the majority accept heavy losses as par for the course. all the best (ok)

 

quote it is essential to put some cocks a side and race mainly hens. a cock is only as good as the hen you pair it to. if you take 10 yb cocks over to next season you need 10 hens. i  think a hen is a very underrated bird.

touch wood never lossed any young birds training,we are training 63 young birds 33 more than we have ever had,but when they go to the first race next week it could be a different kettle of fish we will send half of them as we do every year,so hoping for the best good luck to all you fanciers out there lets hope theres no bad news next week.

Damian i dunno where in cheshire you are but i am in Winsford.Have you noticed how many more Hawks there is around near us now? I am not saying thats the problem just saying it could be.Ive been pretty lucky up to now with training but this week the birds seem to be struggling a bit on traing with me beating them home most day's.But i do throw em up in full cloud cover and they are at a new training point this week.

hi mate in warrington do have a few hawks and others about have had a few scares. I took mine 5 miles monday they were back in 25 mins i dropped one, then same again tuesday they seemed to take for ever this toss dropped 6, i had 2 return in the morning 1 with a bust leg. Then yesterday night though i would leave training and let out round the loft lost 4, then and one came in with its leg hanging off so had to do the nasty. Have had big losses since i started to get young a few months back.

It has been a poor start to the young bird season,have lost 23, half the team, from off the loft,training and one from the first race and 6 from the second at this rate no way I will finish the program all have phone no rings.

i lost 27 on my first toss(about 12 mile) that was 3 weeks ago yesterday i had 2 reported from that toss 1 in durham (about 80 mile away)the other in peterhead(about 130 mile away in the opposite direction)im down to 16 ybs to race
