wee ecky Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 could members please give verdict on how dark it should be in young bird loft also how long they need to be kept on it
Guest cloudview Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 ill answer you wee ecky the loft needs to be in a twilight type darkness not pitch black , just so you can make out perches and drinker time wise a minimum of 8 weeks , so work back from around the middle june , or in other words any yb,s weaned middle april will be fine
kirky Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 as said above it only neads to be twilight darkness so birds can still see to get a drink and get back to perches, i take mine off the dark 6 weeks before first yb race.
jimmy white Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 could members please give verdict on how dark it should be in young bird loft also how long they need to be kept on it as said above , twilight , or sem-dark,, yb,s need to fully body moult without casting flights [the odd one usually does] then put on normal daylight hours on the longest day. remember these yb,s have a second full moult after last race,
Guest Owen Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Ofice hours of daylight. Not pitch dark. Twilight. The birds come into top form about ten weeks after being taken off. The bigest problem can be poor ventilation. Check for cocci because it can be a problem. Mine fly best by seperating the sexes. Slow to moult fights at the end of the year. But fly OK as yearlings. I think that about sums it up.
ryesway Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 is ok to put two seperate rounds of yougster on the dark even tho there going to be diffrent ages, as long as there weaned of buy the middle of april as i dont no that much about darkerning off myself thanks ryan
Guest Owen Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Yes you can add as many as you like. Be careful about the numbers of birds to a section. Don't forget they will not have the best of ventilation during the night. It is very easy to spoil your team by overstocking. The only down side is the fact that the later YBs will slow the others down when it comes to getting up and flying.
