BANDIT Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 A FANCIER CAME TO MY LOFT LAST NIGHT AND HAD A LOOK AT MY BIRDS, HE SAID THEY WERE IN GOOD CONDITION( OLD BIRDS) THEN HE LOOKED AT MY DARKNESS YOUNGBIRDS AND ASKED HOW LONG I HAD THEM ON IT AND HOW MANY HOURS DARK THEY GOT. HE SAID HIS BIRDS ARE THROUGH IT AND LOOK LIKE YEARLINGS, MINE ARE BEHIND HIS IN THE MOULTH, MINE ON DARKNESS FROM 5 IN THE EVENING UNTIL 9 IN THE MORNING SAME AS HIS BUT MINE WENT ON DARK 2 WEEKS BEFORE HIM, QUESTION IS WHY AM I BEHIND HIM IF I WENT ON IT BEFORE HIM, PS IM HAPPY WITH MY BIRDS JUST WANT TO KNOW THE A NSWER TO THISQUESTION. pjc Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Is the loft to light :-/ or to dark and is your feeding right?
Guest Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 or to dark and is your feeding right? :-/ To dark,Whats the feeding got to do with it
pjc Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 surely if the feed isn't right it won't aid the moult.
Guest Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 surely if the feed isn't right it won't aid the moult. You could feed them toast and they would still moult,I used to use the same mix as when breeding,no fancy seeds Healthy birds will moult feeding any kind of food.
pjc Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 correct but the 2 fanciers could be feeding differently, 1 including seeds/grains that will promote the moult but even different lofts put on the system at the same time may moult differently.
mark proctor Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 You could feed them toast and they would still moult,I used to use the same mix as when breeding,no fancy seeds Healthy birds will moult feeding any kind of food. correct card..ive used loads of different makes of corn for the last 11 years and they have always moulted threw loverly...try looking deeper into it....dropping test comes to mind,.... :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

Guest Owen Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 I doubt that what your friend said is actually true. It is more likely that he thought his birds have had enough of darkness and decided to take them off it, while yours are still on it. Your birds will continue to moult until the body moult is complete. His birds would stop moulting and become fully feathered but the body moult will have been interrupted and therefore not complete. The result of which will be that his birds will probably come into form much earlier than yours. However, if you calculate 10 weeks from the time yours are removed from darkness, you will have a rough idea as to when yours will come into form. You can keep your birds on form quite a lot longer if you practice widowhood with them. I have written the above on the assumption that your birds are healthy and not suffering from any form of illness.

BANDIT Posted May 26, 2009 Author Report Posted May 26, 2009 owen he told me his birds are still on the dark and is taking them off the 11 th of june, i asked him if their through the moult why leave them on it , he said he was told to leave them on it until this date.i normally leave mine on until 23 june.
Ronnie Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 when where they bred if his are early bred and yours are later that would make his moult faster. My first round (christmas bred are through the moult) my second round are coming to the end of the moult and a few later ones are half way through they all fly at least an hour a day when first let out and are striking off all day.i feed gem royale as much as the want once a day for 20 min's cider vinigar in the water most days.i dont treat for anything till next week when i will pmv jab them .hope this helps

thunderboult Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 i think he was just bragging his birds up. if your happy ,that's all that matter's. most of what i hear about other fancier's birds is in one ear and out the other, i'm only worried about what happens on the weekend to mine.
