rasbull Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Decided to train my youngsters for the first time today. Took them 5 miles and they beat me back home and all returned safe and sound! Was praying a hawk didnt go through them on this first toss! Has anyone else started training there birds?
pigeonpete Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 very good mate, im pleased! training, mine are only just kitting up properly at the moment, and havent finished their moult! your worrying me now! lol
rasbull Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 They were hatched at the end of march beginning of April. They have been exercising for 1 hour - 2 hours each time they have been out so thought I would try them. I have another 30 in the loft but only just started flying out. I am pleased they come back anyway!!! lol
Craig05 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 mine will be having their first toss on Saturday morning from 10 miles
ritchie1 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 going to wait until there all off the darkness be another two weeks yet
pigeonpete Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 mine will be having their first toss on Saturday morning from 10 miles really dont think thats a good idea mate, as if they do decide to have a fly around, and they get mixed up with racers, you wont be taking them training again.
Guest Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 i wouldnt train on saturdays or wednesdays for the midweek clubs
grizzal Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 i wouldnt train on saturdays or wednesdays for the midweek clubs totally agree also watchout as some clubs who race on a sunday.
Guest Owen Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 I have to wait another two weeks. I will only have 26 so I will split them into two to try to avoud a hawk ruining all of them in one go.
chrisbonnie Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 lads, as a matter of interest, what would the average age of your young birds be before you bring them for their first toss?

Guest kev d Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 the average age of mine when i start to will be 4 months old i start mine in july cos i dont race in a sat club just in the NFC so i dont have to rush them haven,t raced a yb for 4 seasons now but thinking of sending to the national this year if i get my act together
paul10121968 Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 as soon as they begin the ranging thing then short training can be given.ie the local park, and gradually increased.mine were 12 weeks when i started them.
paul10121968 Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 their going great now but unfortunately they took off 5 of my younger ones when i made the mistake of letting them all out together last week.
rasbull Posted June 14, 2009 Author Report Posted June 14, 2009 Well training is going well so far. My first team have now been 8 times in all. I have trained to 20 miles 4 times and today they went to 30 miles. I was missing 4 out of the 15. I just finished work and three of these were on the loft, one missing his whole tail!!! I am missing 1 at the moment. If he does not return tomorrow, it will be the first one I have dropped in 8 tosses and they are up to 30 miles so cant be unhappy with that. My second and third team are in the loft and the 2nd team just finding their wings. These two teams total 45 so plenty in reserve! lol
flyingteessider Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 ive got some old youngins and some younger youngins all in the same loft ,wont make that mistake again ,held me back no end could of been traininng three weeks ago have to wait another fortnight
