pigeonpete Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Well guys and girls, im lost for words this morning! and i must admit i did shed a tear last night and did not sleep! took ybs training last night, even shut the shop early as i was that keen to get them to the race this saturday, weather wasnt the best, and was just starting to rain, ( let them out wed night similiar conditions beat me home) was a bit black, had planned to take them 25 miles, but as i thought the weather was not really suitable, i kept them at the 18 mile point where they had been 3 times before. all i needed was 20 mins, so i realesed them at 18.30 no wind and not raining at present but dull. off they went got up hight straight away. were just going off. and BANG 2 perigrines hit into them dont think they got any?? pigeons all over the place, all 19 of them. waited down my lofts in complete dispair till 9.30 last night not a feather, and about an hour after i let them out, rain had really set in and was dark :-( went down there at 4.30 this morning before work. and not a thing. i really am devastated. have only just been telling people these the were the best ybs since i started racing 4 years ago, flying for upto 2 hours around home, and always beating me back. Now bang all gone. dont know what to do this moment in time :-(

pjc Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 they will have taken cover and then stayed there when the rain started, give them chance to dry out this morning and they will start working in.

Blue Tooner Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I'm sure they will work in for you guys, After my disaster on Tues evening I am now up to 60/67 so keep your chins up and have faith. I know how you feel and it ain't pleasant but give them a day or two In season 2005 we had a similar thing happen, we had 70 y/bs away ranging when the weather closed in with fog and rain, only had 4/70 back by dark. over the next 2 or 3 days we got most back, dropping around 6 or 7. These youngsters won all before them that season, 8x 1st club, 2 x 1st fed and 14th & 33rd open y/b national at 386 miles winning the young bird average in club and fed so sometimes what seems like a disaster can be a blessing in disguise
pigeonpete Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 The wife just phoned me to say i had 4 back :-) she said one of them was limping! :-(
Guest Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Probably as a result of flying into wires or something similar in sheer panic. I had 2 home from my disaster that had injuries to the breast. Hope you get more mate, I'm sure you will
Guest Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 the only bonus of training at night and getting hit by bops is they havent time to go too far with the rain keeping them down also im sure when they dry out you will get most of them home good luck
superstar Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Heres hoping you get most if not all them back Pete! Got to say your in an ever growing club though! Had quite a few hawk attacks on my birds and down to 22 from the original 34 youngsters I started with and 3 of them show the scars of a very lucky escape. Old birds was no different, from the 16 cocks we had to race we lost one racing and 6, all one at a time from training tosses of no more than 30 miles. There isn't a fancier in this area that hasn't had a caning through this, this season and its not going to get better on its own so come on everyone that reads these tails of woe, sign the song bird petition! It might be our only hope we have to highlight our difficulties
Guest stb Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 PETE they were 18 mls away they would go to ground and its been raining give them a bit and they will turn up mate. you have had a few trainers in them and you said they were ranging well so they will know where they are. all the best.
Craig05 Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 im in the same boat sent my 40 young birds last night only had 1 back on the night was up at 430 this morning and got 4 more back so still 35 out 5 of them are gold ringed birds Hope you get them back Karl :-/
Guest strapper Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 if i lose my youngbirds like some have done i will pack racing in altogether..i have had some big knocks in recent years and wont stick around for anymore if i have another. the cost of everything has rocketed and i can find more worthy causes to spend what money i have on.

Guest Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 dont let it get you down Pete , i lost most of mine in 05 .my second year of keeping them ,nearly gave up ,was encouraged to carry on by my cousin . it only takes one bird to win a race . i raced 2 young hens only in the last 5 yb races ,wasnt out of the top ten .timed one hen from Picauville the last race to win club card and yb averages. not looked back since, and dont keep too many race birds. andy.
