Hiya Paddy, as you are new to the sport the easiest way for you would be natural. You can race both cocks and hens. I will be racing it this season with my own birds. If you want any information give me a pm mate.

easiest way would be widowhood imo , benifits are birds fly on a near full wing  ;)

Learn the natural system first, this way you will learn about your birds and be able to race both cocks and hens.

Then while learning read up and learn about roundabout, it takes more time but again you can race both sexes.

i think your club could help you abit more ask one of your members who flys roundabout to have alook at your set up ,its a more controled way of flying, if you havent many birds, you could ask to see how they do it.  best of luck for 2010

widowhood for me you can make it as easy or hard as you wish, depends on the room your got, you can race both cocks and hens on it, Although if your just starting out i would go for just cocks. jmo

Well man a lot will depend on whether you work and whether you will have help. If you fly Natural you will have to train hard so you will need to spend both time and money on training if you want to win things.

If you have limited time, Widowhood with cocks is easily the best system. As you are new to the sport it would probably be better to concentrate on one thing and get it right. The problem with roundabout is that you will need to spend an awful lot of time to get it to work. Add to that the time you will have to give the youngsters and it can become a full time job.

In my own case I have a family life and other interests to look after and I still want to be competitive as a pigeon racer. So I have chosen to concentrate on just widwohood cocks. And, to be honest, they are good enough for me not to want to bother with hens.

You could race your cocks and hens with a comprimised system if you have two ends free. Cocks in end wae their boxs and hens in seperate end on v perch or the like, showing the hens to the cocks before basketin on afriday and exercise seperatley at all times. Not a tru roundabout but should get results

I have been flying a long time and I know it's always been said that widowhood does not take as much training. But I always wondered why???? Can you enlighten us to why it is that natural would require more training and widowhood less???

Yours in the sport.

Well if it was me would have 2 sects still, one 10 x 8 with 16/20 widow boxes and one 6 x 8 with 16/20 v perches and grills on floor, with a solid partition with door between. Cocks in box sections, hens in v perch sect, two closable trap boards (so other sex cannot sit outside sect). Let hens into cocks on friday and trap all birds to box sect on race day. Cocks out twice daily hens once (all they will need) and feed both sexes same as widowhood. Cant get easier than that!

Yes, when you get your widowhood cocks right they will exercise like no other pigeons. Mine will fly away into the distance and give it some wellie while they are doing it. They remind me of angry bees as the fly in a tight group. When they are on form they usually return in ones and twos all over the sky. They will clap about a bit and off they go again. The trick is not to let them become preoccupied with the hens. Mine never see the hens until they return from the first race. If you overuse the hen they will not exercise which is the reason why they get so fit. I have seen other people, who are new to widowhood, show the hens too much, and as a result the cocks will not leave the area. They will spend their time watching the loft while they look for the hens that they believe to be in there. Another major error in handling widowhood cocks is to have them short of food. They must never become hungry. Successful widowhood cocks are able to concentrate on flying themselves fit. When you do decide to basket train them they respond well to groups of two and three rather than all up together. The other big thing to learn is how you can handle the hens in a way that prevents them from pairing together. Because, if they do, the cocks will know and loose that extra edge you need. If you have any doubts about a hen it is better not to try to use her. Either change the hen or race the cock on celibacy.

For people with jobs or restricted time to spend with the pigeons, widowhood is by far the best system. And at the end of every year you will have thoroughly tested your young hens and, because you will not loose many, you will soon have a nice team of quality hens to mate with your best cocks. Hens that do not shine will obviously go.

i would race widowhood with cocks and hens , ive raced widowhood since i was 11 its very simple i wouldnt bother with natural i think its a lot harder to race natural than widowhood and you would have to put alot more time in to race natural , and if your just starting out your not going to be competeing at the distance just yet so you would be 10 - 20 mins off the pace with natural birds
