superstar Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Well old wives tale or not I have had few silver hens and all have bred winners. Gave the last one away to lister on this site and he bred a winner from her too so he informed me. One daughter bred 4 youngsters for the frend of mine in scotland that I had lent her to and the 4 all won for him. Couldnt be mean knowing that and let him keep her. The following year she didnt breed any card winners at all. Not sure about this year as havent spoken to him for months but she has a cracking green eye. Heres a picture for all to see
LISTER Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 yes thats right mark old sterling silver and her grand daughter both crackers
pj1001 Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Breeding silver cocks I feel is really dependant on whether the sire and dam both contain the correct gene combinations. We would have at least 10 silver hens and 3 silver cocks, all bred down from an old line of Irish pigeons called Walkinshaws. You could pair a blue and a blue chequer together that are 3 or more generations down from the original pigeons and still reproduce silvers or ash chequers. Over the past few years we have been trying to reduce the number we are breeding, due to percy having a liking to that particular colour as the majoriy of our pigeons would be blues and blue chequers. For some reason anytime he makes a kill it is the silvers that you expect to be the missing pigeons. In our experience we find them to be better breeders for us than racers but we have had a few in the past that have raced well also up to 420 miles. PJ
Chairman Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 Well mark, your the first to show a real silver albeit a chequer but a nice example of one, I dont know about clean out the bottom nestbox you certainly dont have trouble with mice for there is a piece of maize uneaten in there as well, oh and reset the timer in your camera we all know you were'nt up at 06.42am taking photo's in your loft? But nice try I bet you fooled one or two of the punters?
DeDarren Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 I know this thread is dedicated to the silvers of the fairer sex, but I couldn't help noting that Louella had about 5 beautiful silver cocks for sale on their website roughly 3 weeks ago from their 'Workman' family which is Alf Baker, Stassart based I think, though I could be very wrong! They seem to have them in abundance as they have marketed these silvers regularely on the website during the past year, as well as the 'opal mosaic' Wildemeersch which is another colour entirely I know, but slightly similar, 'depending on the light'..
Wiley Posted November 21, 2008 Author Report Posted November 21, 2008 These are the three basic colours and their corresponding dilutes: Ash red Dilute ash red (Ash Yellow) Blue Dilute blue (Silver) Brown Dilute Brown (Khaki bar) going off topic but is the name of the fancy bird, titled brown?
Glassfeather Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 It's a race of Spanish pouter from the city of Jaén in Linares called "Jiennense".

Glassfeather Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 There aren't a huge number of them here in the UK, and only a handful of people have them.

Glassfeather Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 They are actually derived from a flying breed, the Budapest tumbler, tiny little birds, I don't know of anyone who flies these.
