sapper756 Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 How many rounds would you expect a single hen to lay in one season, whether it be a racer or stock hen? :-/ And why? Do you believe you can cause damage by over breeding with a single hen?
Guest Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 a raceing hen 2 rounds second one single reared 1st round before raceing starts 2nd round to set up for national flying the cocks race to a big youngster the hens to chipping egg (hopefully) ;D ;D ;D a sock hen 3 rounds, one round floated under the racers you dont intend taking anything off, 2 to rear herself dave
Guest IB Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Not sure I've got the question right. I've noted during the breeding season the hen will lay to a monthly cycle .. put her on dummy eggs only, start off in January, lay her 1st say on 11th and she'll lay around the 11th of every month till you allow her to rear a round, or split the pair. When the hen hatches out, she has X number of eggs in her ovaries. She cannot lay any more than that number X. So does it really matter whether you take X over 7 years or 10 years? The most I've ever taken is 5 rounds from a yearling hen and a 2 yo cock, with the same pair rearing 4 rounds. She is 7 this year and still very fertile with different cocks. Last year she laid as described above. I find the difficulty with the round system is the 3rd round doesn't catch the YB racing. I prefer them to have race experience as YBs. I'm thinking of maybe just one round this year.
thomasd Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 can some one tell me im slipping eggs from stock birds to my yearlings if a stock bird laid on the 5th can i slip eggs under my yearlings if they laid on the 8th how many days can you give them
Tom Avis Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Thomasd This will mean that the eggs will hatch 3 days before the yearlings are expecting them to hatch (14th/15th day of incubation), this will be okay, but I wouldn't want to chance it an earlier, as the adopting parents need to be preparing to make "milk" and they start to do this around the 15th day of incubation. Regards Tom
thomasd Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 so how many days can you give them 2 days apart is ok but threes days is abit to early for the yearlings
peterpau Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 can some one tell me im slipping eggs from stock birds to my yearlings if a stock bird laid on the 5th can i slip eggs under my yearlings if they laid on the 8th how many days can you give them The other way round with yearlings would be a problem. Old hens will sit overtime yearlings may not. No worries with what you suggest.
