I paired a distance cock to a sprint hen and ended up with a cock that sprints from 400mile, Ive never seen a pigeon get in so fast like he does from a channel race.

WE BUY SPRINT PIGEONS EXPECTING THEM TO SPRINT, AND TREAT THEM AS SUCH, WE BUY DISTANCE PIGEONS, EXPECTING THEM TO FLY THE DISTANCE,,,, I THINK MORE IMPORTANLY, IS WHAT JOB THEIR SET UP FOR.

yes jimmy true

just a thought westy

what distance do you mean by distance birds

500 600 700 miles

hi nancyviewlofts,

he meant breeding a janssen(sprint)

with a putman (distance)

Basically I thinki you'd get a pigeon that was no good at both.  Sprinter that had his speed tamed a little, and endurance that had been hampered too.

Personally, I'd stay well clear-  although I know of exceptions.  There are always exceptions to every rule if you look enough

Hi

It depends on what distance you define a sprinter. Over in Belgium Sprint Pigeons is from 40 miles to 150 miles. Then you have the Middle distance from 150 miles up to 400 miles then the Fond Meaning long distance up to 550miles then you go on to the Grote Fond Known as the heavy Races

So if you rate a Sprint pigeon that flys no more than 150 Miles and pair it to a Grote Fond or Fond Pigeon you are in most cases dulling the performance of both as Mike says, But say you pair a Middle Distance up to 400 miles to a Grote Fond pigeon the result would come out more satisfactory than the first pairing mentioned

I.e A Janssen Based Pigeon which has scored well up to 400 miles Paired to Pigeons of the Aarden Line have produced some top National Winning Pigeons at 600 miles

same here andrew paired an out and out sprint bird to my old distance breed, was 25 national,,, had an out and out sprint bird top the combine both 505 miles, but found for the 600odd miles needs a special kind of bird, sir colin was 2 national flying 608 miles 1st bird flying over 600 miles in a hard north east wind, i doubt whether these first two birds would have got home,,, theres as many differant types of races than there is differant types of pigeons, so its horses for courses    p.s a yb bred from sir colin topped the fed from penrith, about eighty odd miles.

sorry jimmy cant agree with you take another look at race horse breeders

if they want a 5 or 6 furlong fold they have covered by a stallion that has done the business at that distance likewise at 1 and half -2 milers  thats selective breeding

of course only my view

Andrew what distance do you fly from Pau at a guess 400 mls therefore your sprint cross would work but having to fly 700_800 mls your better off sticking to distance bred birds. Have tried sprint x distance and on hard days they dont handle it. :)
