Silverdale Lofts Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 With not knowing the outcome yet of the bird flu how many ybs are you breeding?
Peckedhen Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I want as many ybs as possible. How many birds will I be able to get from two pairs? I have no other birds that I could float eggs under. :-/
PIGEON_MAN Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 WITH NO LIKLYHOOD OF A DEFINATE ANSWEAR COMING FROM DEFRA AT THE MOMENT AS TO WEATHER OR NOT RACING WILL BE POSSIBLE IN 2006 I THINK ALL WE CAN DO IS TO CARRY ON AS NORMAL,THEREFORE I SHALL BE BREEDING ABOUT 60 YOUNGSTERS.
Guest Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 Was interested in 'reasons' for breeding or not breeding youngsters in 2006. Recently been going over in my own mind the reasons 'we' breed pigeons and why 'we' breed 'x' number? Is the main reason to replace 'probable' OB losses? If it is, and as we all have some limit on our room, there must be some weird losses expected in 2006? Why?
Guest Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 Peckedhen, you'll comfortably breed 3 rounds from each pair in a year, paired in February, with a March, April and May hatch. The most I've taken from a single pair in a year is 5 rounds, paired in January, with the last round flying out around November. You'll have more eggs than you'll know what to do with!!!!!!! ;D
Peckedhen Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 Thanks Bruno - just hope that they turn out to be pairs! :
snowy Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 pecked hen, lost another logan today,(hope its back tomorrow like the last one,) but as soon as i know i have 1 pair homed, you are welcome to the others(if i have any left). ;D
Guest Silverwings Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 will only have 30 rings, plenty for me to cope with and keep an eye on !
snowy Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 hopefully a few more as long as i can dismantle old rotten shed at bottom of garden (in spring) & put up a shed/loft to house my stock birds, if the missis allows,? i will tell her its a shed to store her flower cuttings to start with then divide 3/4 of it to loft! ;D
bewted Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 peckedhen,if u have room, get some cheap garden fantails to float eggs under, they make good foster parents, then u have at least twice the amount of youngsters,,,,bewted
Peckedhen Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Thanks Snowy. :K) Bewted, I've got two garden fantails - I never thought to use them as foster parents but, again, I'm not sure if they are a pair!! :B
bewted Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 have you much room for garden fantails speckle?
Guest Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Wondered about your fantails, Peckedhen, thought you might be wanting to breed them too.. ;D If not, even if they are both hens, they can be used as a foster pair. I think you'd need to bring them inside the loft though and give them a box...
Peckedhen Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 OK, so if I pair the Logans next week and put the fantails in the other loft how will I get them to lay? Am I right thinking that they need to lay at about the same time as the others? If they are two hens and don't lay, do I just put eggs under them will they sit on them? And, do you mean treat them as a pair ie. just two eggs or two eggs per hen? Forgive me if I sound really stupid - I can just imagine some of you guys rolling your eyes heavenwards!! :
andy Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 USUALLY KEEP 60-70 FOR MYSELF.. BREED ABOUT 90-100.. SOME I HAVE ORDERS FOR. OTHERS TO CHARITY SALES ETC...
AlanWilkins Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 ordered 100 club rings + about 25 gold rings ext that includes a 3rd round out of the stock i sell each year so i should have about 80 to race
Chatrace Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 I will breed about 40 for auctions and Out of Area Races. Keep a couple for stock. But will start training around 140YBs that are sent to my race.
westburylofts Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Will be having around 80 - 100 yb's this year as we have plenty of room. Have found the last two year's that most fancier's say they are not loosing many yb's. i have either crap birds or others are telling lie's about the amount of yb's they loss, mind you my crap bird's keep winning, so they cannot be that bad. just to give you an idear we sent 20 yb's too the second to last yb race and only got 5 home, and to this day have not had any of the others reported. some of the birds that we lost had been the most consistant yb's. jimmy white Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 OK, so if I pair the Logans next week and put the fantails in the other loft how will I get them to lay? Forgive me if I sound really stupid - I can just imagine some of you guys rolling your eyes heavenwards!! : hi pcked hen, your right in saying the pair of fantails should lay about the same time as the logans, to foster them, youll get away with it if theres up to about 4 days differance.but if the 2 fantails are hens, they wont sit unless theve laid themselves, and its just two eggs per pair, hope this helps :) p.s i only rolled my eyes heavenwards, when i saw your photo :) good luck
Guest Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 You'd mentioned in another post that the fantails seemed to becoming an item, Peckedhen. Bets are that they are a cock and hen, or a pair of hens. If they are a cock and hen = great. Pair up at the same time as your Logans. When the fantails lay, dispose of their eggs after say 10 days and float the No1 Logan pair's eggs under them. Logan No1 pair will lay again after about 10 days, let them rear this round. Now there's three ways to go if the fantails are hens: (1) pair odd Logan cock with one, and when fantail hen lays, dispose of her eggs after say 10 days and float the No2 Logan pair's eggs under them. Logan No2 pair will lay again after about 10 days, let them rear this round. (2) There is a sub-option too of perhaps a Logan cock from Westy, for the remaining fantail hen, = two foster pairs. OR (3) let the fantail hens pair; they will each lay two eggs... dispose of these four eggs after 10 days as (1) above. Hint: always make a small indelible mark on the Logan eggs, e.g. '1' or '2', with a magic marker, so that you know the difference between the Logan & fantail eggs, and which eggs came from which pair!!! And you've to do all this while standing on one leg and juggling plates in both hands. Now THAT would make my eyes water, er sorry, roll. ;D
Guest Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Westbury, tales of woe this year on losses, so the people talking to you aren't telling the truth. Recent Confederation report in BHW also passed comment that this year 'for the first time' old bird losses were a concern too. Confed 'starting point' - proper space in the race basket. Understand breeding large numbers for charity, fund raising etc.
mealybar Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Hint: always make a small indelible mark on the Logan eggs, e.g. '1' or '2', with a magic marker, so that you know the difference between the Logan & fantail eggs, and which eggs came from which pair!!! I've often wanted to keep track of eggs like this, never actually done it though. I read in one of the vetenary books about the eggs, make sure they dont get very soiled, as the youngsters will suffer. The egg shell allows them to breathe anything on this will effect the yb inside. Bruno maybe you could shed some light on this for me :)
