I had a YB last year that was 2nd club in a real stinker of a race, then 2 weeks later he came and should have won the club by 7mins (bloody thing sat on the roof and ended up 2nd club again) and he would have topped the fed. I had massive hope for him this year but he never even made a top ten position out of the 10 races he was entered into. He will have to improve next season B4 our longest channel race from Bourges or he will be basketed for it.

Two years ago had a young blue pied that won four and took four place cards winning the young bird average's. Did nothing as a yearling or a two year old :)

AFTER THE YOUNGBIRDS CAST THERE FLIGHTS THE WING CHANGES SO NOT ALL GOOD YOUNG BIRDS WILL MAKE IT AS OLD BIRDS BUT GOOD BIRDS WILL ALWAYS SHOW THERE WORTH

I have some Grizzles that were supposed to be distance birds but they are winning shorter races as yb's and yearlings I cant wait till they are 3 yr olds

I ONLY RACE COCKS AS OLD BIRDS SO TEND TO BE EASIER ON THEM AS YOUNGSTERS WHERE AS IAM HARDER ON THE HENS AND THEY ARE USUALLY MY BEST PRIZEWINNERS AS YOUNGSTERS. HOWEVER THE MAJORITY OF MY COCKS THAT HAVE WON AS YOUNGSTERS GO ON TO MAKE GOOD PRIZEWINNERS AS OLD BIRDS. IF THEY DONT THEY ARE OUT. IN THE RIGHT HANDS THERE IS ONLY TWO KINDS OF PIGEONS FOR ME--------GOOD & BAD..

i would prefer to stop the young cocks providing theve been well trained and a few races, ive noticed that bigger cumbersome young cocks take longer to fill out and mature, i beleive a great many good birds can go down as ybs. certainly ive found that winning ybs dont allways make winning obs, but i do like to see them comming steady

In my short experience, I've been led up a blind alley more than a few times trying to judge my young birds...

(1) 2 showing promise as y/birds in 2003 ... both dropped as yearlings in 2004    :o

(2) Apparent dud (lost at 700 yards) ... most consistent young bird races 2005     :o

(3) Only bird to score as y/b 2004 ...  most consistent yearling 2005

I think before you start comparing the results of a young bird against its performance as an old bird you have to take into account the breeding as some of the older families of birds do not mature until 2/3 years.

just my thoughts

youngsters that fly well at there year of birth dont always fly well year after,i had 2 busscheart cocks both nestmates ther came steady as youngsters and as yearling took a few 1st prizes and later became good breeders,i think its down to knowing ur family of pigeons, sorry enouth a lot of fanciers dont keep them in their loft long enough to find them out. good luck 2006

Hi..

In our experience most of our good Old Birds have showed promise as babies. Not always of course, but i'd say 85% of what scored well as babies go on to score well as old birds

all depends what you call a good young bird i once had a hen & a cock she won 2 1st & 1 2nd he won 1 1st & 2 2nds as ybs the following year did excactly the same won loads for years

for me never realy get a yb that scores more than twice its usually different bird which i prefer dont like one bird loft!! later found that my best birds as old birds are the ones that dont score
