antwerptom03 Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 I single tossed all youngsters from my first round from 1,3,5 and 10 miles. At each station i gave one toss from east ,west, north and south. The birds were about 8 weeks old at that time (April)
Guest Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 The Barmy Army will be going down the road starting tomorrow, we don't start racing until mid August
slatey Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 i give them 1st chuck 2 weeks before 1st race so plenty time yet tomo
Diamond dave Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 I'm taking Jack Barkels advice - my younguns have just started to throw their first flight and have been ranging well - so I will start within the next week or so. - Fingers crossed for every one - the first four or five chucks is the most anxious time for me, even worse than waiting for the birds on Saturdays.
snowy Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 3rd toss today from same spot 3 miles.( all straight out of basket & home) any advice on next distance to toss from?
jimmy white Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 what i would say snowy, is when you start,,keep them going, every day if poss.
T_T Posted June 9, 2006 Report Posted June 9, 2006 Agree with Jimmy, once you start with youngsters, MUST go every day. That's why I start two weeks before the first YB race and keep em going, sometimes twice a day, depending on how well they are coming. I also train no further than 20mls but that's my own thing.
speedbird Posted June 18, 2006 Report Posted June 18, 2006 its a confidence thing start em at 3miles working up to 60miles but like jimmy said once you start you must keep em going
snowy Posted June 18, 2006 Report Posted June 18, 2006 up to 9 miles last toss, all bak ok. but the last one back on his own half hour later than the rest. today, took them a shorter toss than before 5 miles, all been there & straight back, but today, the one that came last on the 9 mile toss aint come back? any reasons you think?
Guest shadow Posted June 18, 2006 Report Posted June 18, 2006 Once you start training young birds as you move them further away I never drop mine back to a shorter distance as they tend to overfly. But then I start my young birds at 20 miles and keep them there until they beat me home.
superstar Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 yes hostilities have started! 4 tosses from 1 1/2 miles all in less than 2 mins each and 1 from 3 miles in slightly over 3 mins so not a bad start but theres plenty of time for that to change lol. I also think your right about keeping them going and never bringing them back to short tosses, i have never done that myself but have heard of people doing it and having complete disasters losing entire teams of youngsters, each to their own though i say! Good luck to you all with your YB's however you go about training them and my fingers are crossed its a good year for everyone, especially my 15yr old son John whos taken up racing from me. Good luck kidder! Give 'um hell not lol ;D
jimmy white Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 great pics, superstar snowy ybs are bad for taking knocks, just maybe that bird had ,had a knock, if its back give it a good check over,,best of luck
snowy Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 up to 9 miles last toss, all bak ok. but the last one back on his own half hour later than the rest. today, took them a shorter toss than before 5 miles, all been there & straight back, but today, the one that came last on the 9 mile toss aint come back? any reasons you think? back 2 days after, ;D a bit thin & worse for where, just gagging to get in loft ;D
jimmy white Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 one way of looking at it snowy ;D ill bet that bird learned more than the others ;D
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 When they come way late like that its like sending them to college I wish all mine would get lost early like that it smartens them up in a hurry I start at 10 - 15 miles and try to get to 100, 2 weeks before races start
shiftty Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 i just give them basket training and all ma youngsters baring 2 (which i have just recieved of a good friend that will be entering the comeback races), from 30 or so miles and i got good returns, the traing toss educated them as well because they were not straight home, they were ranging which is always good for the youngsters in my opinion
