paul10121968 Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 can anyone tell me how long it normally takes a youngster to chip its way out if an egg.so far he has been chipping for 2 days.is this a normal time frame or do you think i should intervene and help him along a bit.all my other youngsters have taken about a day and a half to release themselves.
alex wight Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 I would let it chip out on its own if it cant, you can put it down to being weak and no good. Normally takes about 2 days. all the best alex. (imao)
BANDIT Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 Never help any youngster out of the egg, if their not strong enough to hatch they are no good. let mother nature do her job. only the strong should survive. bandit
Guest IB Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 After I hear the youngster chipping, I don't handle the egg again - I watch for eggshells as a sign that it's out OK. I agree that you should not assist - I did once and had a nasty experience, learnt a couple of things from that. A youngster normally hatches by chipping holes right round the egg, and pushing the top off; this one chipped a hole through the egg and did nothing more - saw it's beak opening and closing, so broke the shell. Big mistake. That youngster's yolk-sac hadn't absorbed, so when it did come out, it broke off, covering the nest and sitting bird with yolk - and blood, because the youngster bled to death. No, don't assist - under any circumstances.
fletch Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 have to agree with most comments let nature take its course only the strong survive
