Yeh mine always do the same with tobacco + I dont think any bugs can live in the tabacco so its also good for them   :). I like to put it on the grass and watch them go to and frow collecting it, which keeps them fit and happy  ;).

;D nest felts covered in newspaper , light sprinkling of anti mite powder . tobbacco stalks cut small 3-4 inches long placed in an old grit box (birds keep busy back and too colllecting) when nest look ok dont put any more stalks in ,  thats my way , happy with it!                                  andy   8)

I used to use straw but would never again, when it gets damp due to the droppings fungus ill thrive in the straw.

With straw you have to have the treated straw or your asking for trouble

Tobacco stalks for me everytime, if I had to use straw i would get it sterilised by the autoclave

Tobbaco stalks chopped into shorter lengths straw carries the northern mite which will irritate the birds if you want to use straw disinfect it first with jeyes fluid and let it dry :)

i line my nest bowls with newspaper, spray any good bird insect repelant place the nest felt ontop of this and give them tabacco stalks to build a nest

siver birch tiggs same as the wild wood pigeon uses they are free to collect and only need putting in the oven for half hour ,once pigeons build there nest i then raid the ash trays for all the doudts and sprinkle the tabacco into the nest which keeps the nest clear of miteis ,it does work .

brilliant pic ,, carl,,, whatever i use , usually tobacco stalks , but like to make them work for it , scattter it further and further away from loft , this can make them very keen when they have to fly with it.

barley straw can , at time's be infested with tick's. as it is hallow they hide inside the stem, if you are going to use straw , use wheat straw, the stem's are solid. also try putting a beer mat below the nest bowls, that has been dipped in creasoat, i also put one in the bowl below the nesting material, never had tick's or red mite prob's

always put in a nest felt, and then use tobacco stalks chopped up and straw from the pet shops because this has been treated and is suitable for small animals, so okay for the birds

Paired the birds up last weekend, gave them their nest bowls with nest felt (dusted) Wednesday.

I haven't had them out yet for twigs and I haven't managed to get into town for straw yet. Got a bit of a surprise today:

late bred cock has been gathering 'chips' - thin pancakes of dried droppings 1-2" in diameter - and the hen has lined the bottom of the bowl with around 12 of them!

Haven't heard of or ever seen this one before: ;D

when i used to keep them in the "yard"  this was a yard they did car repairs , scrap cars, greyhounds the lot ;D ;D ;D the birds used to collect the bits of WELDING RODS for nesting material AFTER me putting tobaco stalks down ;D ;D ;D

The other thing which at least one of the birds is trying to move to the nest box is a triangular scraper.

Think I'll fashion a load of bar-bells from sticks.  ;D
