westy Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 as i am racing oldbirds hens and cocks together a few pairs have laid eggs is is possible to race these pigeons if i keep th ybs from them or isent it its just a questiion id like to ask and would it affect the pigeons or young.
Guest shadow Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 If you are racing natural yes you can send them sitting or feeding young preferably bigger young not on soft food.
Guest Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Its always been a thorny question, from when I was the same age as you, Westy. Opinion was that you either raced or bred, not both. The other consideration is that you are putting the bird under a double load, and if either of the parents go down in the race under that load, what happens to your youngster ? Know that youngsters are slipped under racers to give them an edge, but that is usually from another pair who are doing all the hard work.
jupiter_19630 Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 When we raced in the 70's we bred and raced at the same time. We won plenty of cards. It's surprising how fast a bird will fly if it has a youngster to feed. I intend to do the same 2nd time round. It is true that it puts a certain amount of strain on birds doing both, but a good bird should cope. On the second round my racers will only bring up one chick. If one parent is lost the remaining parent will bring up the chick all on their own with no problem for the parent or chick.
Guest Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Jupiter, agree with what you say about no problem for remaining parent or youngster, but surely its a problem for you, because you've lost one bird, and now can't race another because its rearing on its own?
madmaxlofts Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 i think youll find pigeons come better on the long races if there coming to a 5 day young 1 or chipping eggs especialy hens
pigeonscout Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Most will feed light from sunday to wed afternoon then go on to racing mix so how do you feed if they have young in the nest?
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 have all my young birds away before racing starts, but then use chicks from stock loft to put under hens for certain races

Not really a problem. If you lose a bird and wish to race the remaining parent you just foster out the egg or chick to a pair that are not racing that week. If you lose that bird the foster parents will bring up the chick. If it comes back you give the bird back its egg or chick.
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 yes because breeding of a pigeon is ment to be like flying 600-700 miles for them i was told, not so long ago
jimmy white Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 hi young westy ,hope your well ,as with your family,,, yes i would say you would be able to send birds that are breeding ,, only thing i would say is that when an adult pair are feeding two big ybs , it does take an awfull lot out of them,, so i would be carefull there, ,, but as a rule of thumb ,so to speak ive found that some of the best conditions are,,,,, a cock sitting 10 days on eggs, a cock or hen sent sitting on chipping eggs, or a3 day old wee yb ,,, an older cock driving [not a yearling , they seem yo get too excited, even a cock feeding a big yb with the hen sitting again [the bg yb usually eating itself from a galley pt],,,a hen sitting overdue on dummy eggs , then just when it starts to come off them [about 21/22 days] slip a wee youngster under it , it can become very keen then [especialy if its the birds first yb that year]there are many ways to make the bird keen , but off course it has to be very fit in the first place , pigeons are individuals ,and some race better to a certain way, its just a case of knowing your birds and finding out what they race best to,, its worth keeping a wee book and each week writting down the positions your birds came in to you , and writting down their nesting conditions etc ,best of luck, you did well last year for your first year, so lets hope you can now even improve on that, id love to hear either phone or pm that youve won a race, this year :) :)i think i would be as excited as you ;D ;D ;D,,,,good luck
Guest slugmonkey Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 I race birds on eggs a lot, best thing is to split eggs so all pairs are only sitting 1 live egg I pull good eggs and put one under a set of pumpers then put in a bad or pot egg so only 1 will hatch these are easily fostered under a set that only has 1 baby in nest just move baby from under racer to pumper nest on loading day and then put back in nest after racers return I also belive single reared birds are a lot better than nests with 2 unless they are hatched real early then they need each other to stay warm
Chatrace Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 When i race old birds I fly Natural and let them raise 1 YB, I try and set them up so the Hen gets a 10day egg to return home to fron a 300 or 400 mile race and the cock bird comes better on a 10 day old baby for his 400 or 500
speedbird Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 my dad once raced widowhood cocks & have a few hens still in the loft due to late laying before gong on roundabout & winning 1st with a widowhood cock and geting 2nd with a natural hen on a big youngen in same loft
