madas26 Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 hi all last week i received a phone call on my answer phone there was a message left for me that one of my racers had been found,so the next day i rang them to find it was a vet that had called me,some one had found my pigeon and handed it in to vets,so i sent amtrak for it and my bird was delivered yesterday, the vet had told me it the pigeon had something wrong with wing,so wen i opened box ye the pigeon had a broken wing, wot i cant understand is why didnt the vet strap or tie the wing up,id say they must of had it for at least 3 days, the pigeon is no good to me with broken wing i may aswell of told them to dispose of it,but instead i was faced with a £30 amtrak fee for a pigeon i can no longer race rant other with hehee
Guest Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Agree, very bad show. Only 'excuse' maybe that this wasn't an avian vet, but still doesn't excuse shipping the bird in that condition, could have got advice from one, and at least strapped the bird's wing. You may have also written the bird off too soon. Depending on what's broken, an avian vet might get the bird in the air again for under £20.
Guest Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Ordinary vets know virtually nothing about birds, probably didn't even know it was broken,a friend took a pigeon with a bkoken leg to our local vet and had to be told it needed splinting.Don't write the bird off I have 2 with permenently damaged wings from hawk attacks and although they could never race they have adapted well and fly round the loft in a fashion, could even make a full recovery....may not be as bad as you think..get someone to look at it.Think you were lucky at the vets though, ours would probably have sent you a bill for doing nothing!!!
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 have found that after a bird has had a broken wing it never makes a good enough recovery to race again, only my experience with the two i have had over the years
Guest Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 ;D i collected an NEHU stray froma bungalow near me last year , the oaps in it said the bird had been around for 3 weeks , after 1 week of feeding it he managed to catch it in kitchen , took it along to laocal vets 10am next day , they said would get it back to rightfull owner ?? by 2pm sameday bird was back at the bungalow !! vets pffft?? andy
jimmy white Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 yes i agree, a very bad show by the vet ,, i had this before, with a pigeon handed in to a vet with a broken wing, but the bird was returned, treated and bound , even allthough i got quite a heafty bill ,, the vet did the right thing,, and trusted me before he even knew who i was ,,,,so , as ive said b4 there are vets and vets,,, this one wasnt , shame on him

BIGK Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 why is everyone supprised the last time I was at the vet I walked in the door £10, sat down £10 went into the surgery £20 the vet had a look at the little dog £15 and then he gave her 21 amoxcillan tablets £75 later and a full 20 mins that was that. peterpau Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 As a livestock carrier, I would be prosecuted for carrying an animal in an unfit state. Amazing what vet's get up to.
Guest Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 well Brunos in to vetting, he vets half the posts put up ;D ;D Yep have found Moveitmycin and Deletomoxin particularly effective at ridding cyberspace of noxious substances. ;D
Guest Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 have found that after a bird has had a broken wing it never makes a good enough recovery to race again, only my experience with the two i have had over the years I've only had experience of one Tammy, a young bird with a broken radius. Bird couldn't fly, was strapped-up and spent 6 weeks in a nest box, bandage came off and straight away up it went to the perches. Trained not raced as a yearling last year, was coming fine until sent with 4 others [3 fanciers' birds] on a 100 mile trainer ... and disaster ... 2 lost - this bird was one of them, 1 hawked & out for 2 days, and the other 2 out overnight.

jimmy white Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 youll probably find it is the ulna bone which is broken on the pigeons wing, allthough repairable to a certain extent ,unforunately, the pigeon would not be able to race and win again
mickmcgrevy Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 Vets seem to be getting a bit of a going over here ( and I do agree they know what to charge ) but, I recieved a phone call this morning at aprox 10am from a person who I did not know in Bristol, I live near to Rotherham. He had a bird reported by a vet which someone had brought in to the surgery, it being Friday no amtrack or other carrier, the vet couldn't keep it over the weekend, he said, so this chap from Bristol had got my number from a third party and phoned me, at 11am the bird was at my house NO CHARGE FROM THE VET, so some do care. All the best Mick
peterpau Posted May 4, 2007 Report Posted May 4, 2007 You're right Mick. However I can't understand how sick pigeons find there way into a carrier though. I happens far too often for me
Ian McKay Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 Peterpau you are right if the vet had read the DEFRA rules he should NOT have shipped the bird : : : : : : : : : and you would think any vet should know them half of them are there to give them work ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

One other thing if you have a bird that damages a wing never be so cruel as to race it again, flying round the loft is one thing coming home from France quite another!
