Anyone have any advice how to make young birds trap better.

Youve probably heard it all before.I had 8 youngsters sat on the roof at 12:46 after flying round the house for at least 2 mins i finally clocked one at 12:54 .Down at the club it looks like the winner is in for 12:48 (i have to give him about 1 min 30 over fly).

I know it was only the first young bird race and it dosnt mean to much but i am still a bit peeved at the way they trapped (especially as it wouldve been my first card). On training i dont have any one at home to trap the birds for me so they wait till i get home and then i let them all in at 15:00 when they all get fed together. At feeding time they allways trap well but i think this is due to them being on a fixed time and are used to coming in at that time.On the friday i had them all fed for 12 o clock so they shouldve been quite hungry.

Maybe it was the shock of the first race .Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah i fly to a sputnick .

Thanks in advance

LEAVE YA SPUTNICK OPEN ENOUGH SO AS THEY CAN GET IN FROM TRAINING ND HAVE FEEDING DONE FOR THEM THEY WONT BELONG IN GETTING TO KNOW WHAT THYE HAVE TO DO ,FRIDAY MORNING AS EARLY AS YOU CAN GIVE THEM A VERY LIGHT FEED ABOUT 3/4 OUNCE PREFERA BLY DAPUTITIVE OR DIET MIX ,GOOD LUCK

Can you not leave the sputnick open when you leave to train the birds ? if you can you could put a little food in they loft for them to get used to (first in gets fed ).At least they would learn to go into the loft each time instead of waiting around to be let in ?

My own youngsters know now that if they waste time on the roof they dont get there breakfast !!

from being weaned my birds are basketed every day (hungry) for 2 weeks before they get to fly out......and physically carried to the stall trap and pushed through into the loft where the breakfast is waiting.............they soon get to know that when they go through the trap....grubs up..............

you'll always get a twitchy one that lags behind the rest...but i hopper feeding give them a very light fed so that when the lagger gets in theirs no sctram left for him.....after a  couple of times of missing out on grub...they soon realise that they got to get in quick to get fed..........

PUT A SHEET OF PERSPECT DOWN WITH SOME TRAPPING  SEED UNDER IT , THROUGH A HAND FULL ON TOP , YB,S WILL PICK AT THIS FOR AGES ,WHEN THE REST COME IN , THEY ALL CAN GET THE SAME TO EAT  :) BUT THE LAST IN ONES IN , LET THEM HAVE A PICK AT" NOTHING" AT FIRST ;D

You have to have a signal for the birds to come in that they assocciate with food, be it rattling  a tin, calling, whistling, whatever. Just choose a method and stick to it. Avoid overfeeding as they wont rush to come in on a sunny day if they arnt hungry.

I let my birds out for an hour before training, then call them in and basket them.

While in the basket i let them hear me putting food in the trough.I leave the trap open while I,m away. They are are always in the loft when I get home.

if you have two sections spilt the sexes and race them back to each other.

When you train them release the hens and gave them 10-15 minutes so they are back well before the cocks then release the cocks. They will trap like rockets once they get used to the system.

Let them mingle half a hour when they get back then seperate again.

cut down food mate then they will trap if they dont all trap as a team hit them all where it hurts the food they go without till they peform as a team if they dont all peform bin them

Leave the trap open for when they get back from training with just a little red band or similar food on the inside of the trap meaning first in first fed. When the birds see the first one eating they will soon get the idea. When all your birds are back in give a little more seed. Remember to have the seed in the trap on race days too.

Agree with Stuart. Once the birds are settled and confident with you, don't let them drop on the roof. Whenever they land there gently get them back in the air and keep repeating until they land where you want them to. You will be amazed at how quickly they catch on.
